DEER, RAIN, AND GARLIC BREAD.
Day 27 – This particular trip to Lily Bay State Park is really just a stopover between longer campground stays. We’ll only be here one full day (two nights) before moving on tomorrow to another two-night stopover. The eventual longer-term destination will be Coleman State Park in Errol, New Hampshire, followed by another longer stop in Vermont. It was supposed to rain here all day, so we hadn’t planned to do anything outdoors today, just some catching up inside while it rained.
Late yesterday afternoon, the couple camping next to us returned from a walk with a Deer following them – a young female deer, but old enough not to have spots. At first glance, I thought, “wow, that’s a big dog!” The woman went inside their trailer and came out with a bag of what we assume was deer food. They put it in a bowl & the deer calmly ate it. Then the woman came out with an apple which she cut into bite-sized chunks. The deer ate right out of her hand. At first we thought it was cute, but people are asked not to feed the animals for a reason. Later last night the deer came back looking for more food & she returned this morning for breakfast. We don’t think the people were up yet. Not so “cute” anymore, the questions are what happens when the camping season is over? Who feeds the deer then when they’ve become accustomed to being fed by people? And how good is it for a wild animal to be unafraid of people?
It did rain a little last night, but this morning when we checked the weather forecast, it had changed to no rain until later today. Warm, humid & cloudy this morning, we went into town (Greenville) and bought some vegetables and more bug spray. When we got back to the RV we started working on today’s chore – making a couple of large loaves of Italian Herb bread – which we finish off with butter, garlic, and mozzarella cheese. It takes many hours, this task, because we do each loaf one at a time with one bread maker and a small oven. When they cool, we store the sliced bread in the freezer and it’s readily available when we make Italian food (often). It was wonderfully torturous in this vehicle all day with the smell of baking bread, melted butter, and garlic!
Thunder started first in the distance, then came the rain about 6 p.m. The high today was 66 degrees. Dinner last night & tonight was baked Chilean Sea Bass with a teriyaki glaze, Israeli Cous Cous, and vegetables. All topped off with chocolate-covered peanuts for dessert. Tomorrow we leave for Rangeley Lakes State Park.
