POTATOES & TENTS.
Day 22 – We slept well at the new site. It was very quiet, 48 degrees this morning and sunny. We took a walk around the campground; most people weren’t up yet. Middle of the week and the campground is maybe ¼ full, but the weekend is coming & many of the campsites are marked “Reserved”.
While walking around, we did see a great screened tent set up at one campsite. Our current screened tent has some holes in it & is getting old. We’ve had it for many years and have gotten lots of use out of it. We’re looking for something similar, a certain size with full screen all the way around, a rain cover over the top, AND an attached floor. (Most tents we’ve seen in the past few years are gazebo-like and do not have floors.) We’re going to ask the occupants of the campsite about their tent (when they are up and around). Meanwhile, today we’re going to the Amish farms & store, doing a little grocery shopping, and driving around.
We hung around the RV for a while, then drove to Easton, where rolling farmland hills & farms dot the countryside. This is an Amish community and we often saw families at work on their farms and horse-drawn buggies are the main transportation. Very tranquil and beautiful, it’s one of our favorite areas here. Potato fields cover the hills, and the plants were just beginning to show up above-ground. We went to the Amish store we always go to; it was closed and they’d just moved to a new address. We drove to the new store and were greeted by several gorgeous children who were playing outside at the farm. They were very friendly. The grandmother came outside and welcomed us to the new store. Today was their first day at the new location and she was unpacking goods. She said we were their first customers. At the previous store, you’d walk in and be hit in the face with the smell of fresh baked bread and cookies. Unfortunately, there were no baked goods since they were just opening up. We did find some herbs, and a couple of kitchen utensils we needed, plus we couldn’t resist the homemade chocolate covered peanuts. Grandma said they’d moved the store to the farm so they wouldn’t need to go so far everyday. The store & farm were immaculate, as were the children. They all looked so healthy!
We went to a grocery store in town to get a few groceries not available at the farm store. It was crowded out, and we only saw maybe four people with masks. Life seems to be back to normal here. When we got back to the campground, we stopped at the campsite
to ask the man about his tent. We got the name of the company that makes them (Pahaque), went back to the RV, put up the groceries, and had lunch. And that was pretty much it for the day. A little time in the tent, some reading, etc. After all those potato fields, we had potatoes for dinner. Not too exciting. The high today was 60 degrees and it was sunny, and a bit windy at times.
