NEWFOUNDLAND – GOOD WEATHER!
Day 163 – A beautiful day today, it was 36 degrees with full sun when we got up. Only a little bit of haze over the mountains – this doesn’t happen often, particularly lately. There was frost on the ground, ice on the Honda’s windows, but the sun was out without clouds & heavy winds, that’s all that mattered.
We left a little after 10 a.m. to drive Route 450 to the end of the peninsula at Little Port. We’d done this drive before & the scenery had been amazing. We wanted to see it one more time before we left, and the weather was excellent. There was a little one-acre plot of land for sale at the end of the road in Little Port. We saw it last time, but at the time didn’t know it was for sale. A little searching on the internet found that it was for sale; we wanted to take another look at it.
On the way north to the 450, we stopped again at the Subway in Corner Brook for sandwiches to go. This particular Subway is really good – they vary, you know. Even though we’d seen it before, the scenery on this peninsula still had us going “WOW” at every turn of the road or at the appearance of the bay when we crested the top of a hill. At several turn-outs we stopped to walk a little ways on a trail to see more. The mountains were incredible; the water views again spectacular. We stopped to eat our sandwiches overlooking the islands in the Bay.
In addition to the small hikes I took with Rob on several trails with boardwalks, he took several good hikes himself. The Blow Me Down Provincial Park was closed for the season; we stopped at the closed gate & Rob walked in to check out the area. Copper Mine Falls Trail was another hike that Rob took which offered some good views of the Bay of Islands & The Falls. Last time we were here, we saw a B&B with cottages in York Harbour that also advertised RV parking on their sign. This time, we drove down to their property & took a look, There were a couple of full hook-up campsites, so we’ll keep that in mind for next time (note to self). The location was at the top of a cliff overlooking the Harbour.

At the end of the road in the tiny village of Little Port, we stopped to look around. The scenery there is amazing. It’s in a valley surrounded by tall mountains. There’s a cove with a working fishing dock. The land for sale was so nice with its own beach. Right on the cove & surrounded by mountains, the property itself was really only visible if you were on the fishing dock & looking back at it. The price was excellent, and we wondered why it was so reasonable: there was no road to get to the land, the new owner would have to put in a road; no electricity, no water, no sewer. There was a hiking trail that went along the back of the property from one hill to the top of the mountain on the other side. There were ATV tracks over the hill that led to the property. So, it was almost perfect.
The high today was 58 degrees, a gorgeous day. We drove back to the RV thinking about that acre of land. But no, we are not going to do it. Not this time anyway, LOL.
Dhoon Lodge & RV Resort: 11 Route 460, Black Duck Siding, NL A0L 1G0; (709) 646-5177 or (709) 214-0709; www.dhoonlodge.ca. This is an independent campground with 36 RV sites. We had site #20 with full hook-ups including sewer. The campsites surrounded by trees were filled with seasonal campers (although very few were there). We camped in the larger, more open area. All campsites in this area were very large, some had decks, all had picnic tables & fire pits. Our campsite had steps leading from the site to the beach & Harry’s River. Because it was off-season & the weather was pretty cold, the campground wasn’t as crowded as it was when we were here just a couple of weeks ago. We had plenty of privacy. There were also a restaurant & bar (which we did not use), a lodge, cottages & cabins, a golf course, fishing, showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities. They were one of the few campgrounds south of Gros Morne still open through October. $35 per night Canadian currency. We would stay here again
