NEWFOUNDLAND – THE FOG HAS LIFTED.

Day 98 – It was 51 degrees & very foggy this morning at 7:30 a.m.  We tried to return some e-mails & do some other internet-related things, but the signal has been completely gone. We are blogging in between the signal coming & going. At about 11:30, the sun came out here at the campground. We hadn’t seen much of our surroundings for days. Today we could drive to some of the local sights & back to the area we covered Wednesday to see what we’ve been missing.

We went to Deadman’s Cove which is the cove that the campground is near. We can hear the waves from our site, and certainly the Sea Gulls & Kittiwakes that congregate at the islands just off shore. It was very pretty.

We drove out the campground road to a pull-out across Route 360 to see the city of Harbour Breton without fog. We drove to the Rocky Point Lighthouse, we stopped at a couple of city overlooks of the town and the wharf. Harbour Breton is considered to be one of the oldest & largest communities on the south coast. It was first settled by French fishermen & later by the English. It is certainly larger than most of the remote coastal fishing villages we’ve visited, but not large by US standards. The whole coastal area is heavily indented with spectacular fjords. The city is surrounded by rocky hills. In August 1973, there was a landslide after days of heavy rain. In the middle of the night, the rock, mud, & debris flowed down the hill into the city, wiping out 4 houses and killing four out of five children in a family. We went to the Hickey Landslide Memorial. You could see where the hill “collapsed” near the middle of town.

We went back to the small towns of Hermitage, Sandyville, and Seal Cove, the area we visited previously. This trip, though, we did not stop at scenic, tiny Furby’s Cove. It was the only town we visited before that had enough sunlight to see how pretty it was. On the way out of Seal Cove, Rob spied an adult Bald Eagle & stopped the car for pictures when the bird landed on a rock. It had just captured lunch and was carrying the prey in its talons.

Back at the RV the fog had not returned. We took our beer & wine to the screened tent and celebrated the return of the sun. The high today was 78 degrees, breezy and sunny.
