GOOD LUCK, KAREN! HOPE IT GOES WELL. THINKING OF YOU.

Day 3 – It was 37 degrees this morning when Rob got up and a bright, sunny day. Today we will go to Freeport, Maine & spend the night. We’ve got some shopping to do, and the huge LL Bean complex of stores is located there.  Their outlet store is amazing, and we never cease to find great deals when we stop, although we do try to limit ourselves to just getting things we need (since retirement). One of our favorite cities, we really like Freeport, and one of our favorite restaurants is located at the Harraseeket Inn. You can’t imagine how good their lobster soup is; they call it Lobster Stew, and it has lots of extremely tender, fresh lobster in it, https://www.harraseeketinn.com/,

We departed Salisbury Beach State Reservation at 10:40 a.m.  It was 48 degrees and sunny with some wind gusts that caught us by surprise. It’s possible there’s a lot of wind here this time of year; we don’t usually come up to Maine this early. And then we thought about the possibility of high winds in Atlantic Canada in May. I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Shortly after leaving the campground, right after getting on I-95 heading north, we entered New Hamshire. There wasn’t much traffic and the traffic decreased even more when we crossed the border into Maine, less than ½ hour later. We stopped for lunch at a welcome center below Freeport, then continued north. We got gas in Freeport, and arrived at our campground at 1:15 p.m.  We’d never seen Freeport so uncrowded. A Monday, off-season, and even an RV with a tow-car can get through the busy town easily. It was 53 degrees & sunny.

We are staying at Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Campground, formerly known as Recompense Shore Campsites. We stayed here before when it was called Recompense, from one night stopovers to longer stays. It’s a lovely campground located near Wolfe’s Neck State Park. The campground in on the grounds of a large working farm, Wolfe’s Neck Farm, and there’s plenty to do right here. The kayaking here is popular & you can launch right into the Casco Bay which leads to the Atlantic Ocean. The Farm offers tours, classes in growing & raising your own food organically, there are programs for children, and it’s all located near Freeport. They’ve expanded the Farm & are almost finished with a very nice organic dairy farm area. The waterfront & waterview campsites weren’t open yet due to mud from all the rain they’ve gotten. We got a nice pull-through campsite (#111) with water & electric hook-ups. There’s a brand new dump station. We have a good view overlooking the farm fields, and through the trees we can see the water of the Bay. No one is camping anywhere near us.

After setting up, we left for Freeport. The girls were curled up on the dashboard of the RV sunning themselves. We went to the LL Bean Outlet first and found shoes for Rob which he needed – 30% off. He also got a fishing vest, not for fishing but for using the many pockets to carry around his camera lenses, also 40% off. We needed a new bathmat since the one in the RV was old & deteriorating. We got one at Cuddledown (not on sale). We stopped at the Corningware Outlet & got two baking pans that we needed for making french bread. Rob needed a couple of other items which he found at the GAP Outlet, more than 50% off. It was a highly successful shopping trip, made easier by the lack of crowds.

We went for an early dinner at Harraseeket Inn – the Broad Arrow Tavern. (They also have a very nice, gourmet restaurant on premises, The Maine Dining Room.) We got our standard Lobster Stew and each had Lobster Rolls which came with the best Sweet Potato Fries we’d ever had. Very full, we rolled out to the parking lot and back to the campground, early enough to make a loaf of bread and spend the evening relaxing while our dinner settled. A very good day, the high was 58 degrees.

It’s a great place for a one-night stopover or for a much longer visit. We had Site #111, a pull-through campsite with water & electric hook-ups; there is a dump station.
