Day 136 – Clear sky, sunny, 30 degrees at 8 a.m. A low of 27 degrees last night. The wind increased during the day. With the sun shining, it didn’t look cold at all – until you stepped out the door! Rob brought the pumpkin we’d bought indoors so it would thaw out enough that we could carve it.
Now that there’s some gravel covering the pad Rob is creating at the retaining wall, he could bring his chair down & sit with his coffee. (For clarification in the future, I’m gonna call this the Harbor View Pad.) Too cold for me this morning. When he was there, one of the lobster boats was heading out of the Harbor. They could see him & they waved at each other. Before, we all could rarely see each other through the woods between where we were sitting & the water. This is just the improvement we were looking for.

We’d heard that Frank’s Dockside Restaurant, the place we had tried to get into last night, was offering its Mexican Weekend menu thru tomorrow night. Since it looked like a heavy wind & rain storm was forecast for tomorrow night, we decided to go tonight. We arrived at Frank’s in Lubec a little after 5 p.m. They were already fairly crowded. Several large parties came in also when we were there. This is not a huge restaurant & it was cold outside, so seating was not offered for the porch overlooking the water & Campobello Island. There was a Trump Pinata hanging from the ceiling. Unfortunately we were there too early to witness its destruction.

The Mexican Weekend menu is only offered once, occasionally twice a year, according to Debbie, our waitress. The regular menu was also available, but from what we could see, almost everyone was there for the Mexican food. And it was EXCELLENT. The menu changes, but we loved everything we ordered.
Okay, foodies, savor this: we started with Mexican Coffee to warm up. We requested decaf coffee & she made a fresh pot. Tequila & decaf with lots of cinnamon & fresh whipped cream. Perfect. (They usually only serve beer & wine.) Guacamole & Chips to start; the chips were fresh-fried, not greasy, flour tortilla wedges (rather than the standard salted corn tortilla chips). Their Guacamole was simple, not all fancied-up with extra ingredients, just mashed avocado, a small amount of tomato & some chopped jalapeno peppers with a touch of lime.
For dinner, we split the Crab Quesadilla & the Shrimp Enchilada. The Quesadilla consisted of six grilled flour tortilla wedges filled with lots of fresh crabmeat, a little cheese, and a little finely chopped red peppers, served warm with salsa & sour cream. Simple & delicious. The Shrimp Enchilada was actually two large enchiladas, almost burrito-sized. They were fantastic, and if we’d known they were so good, we would have ordered two enchilada dinners. Each enchilada was filled with fresh, tender shrimp, cheese, onion, & seasonings (which must’ve included garlic from the way they tasted), and baked. The red sauce that covered the enchiladas was really, really good. We’ve only had a sauce like that once before at a Spanish, not Mexican, restaurant. It was different than the enchilada sauce we usually get at a Mexican restaurant. The sauce was thick & chunky with sweet tomatoes & onion, giving it a sweet, slightly spicy taste, rather than a thin, salty, spicy, slightly oily taste. That’s the only way I know how to describe it. The dinner also came with very good spanish rice & standard refried beans.
Since we didn’t get two enchilada dinners, we had room for dessert – Rob had the Churros & he said they were good, covered with enough sugar & cinnamon to make them dark in color, served with chocolate dipping sauce on the side. I did not taste them since I was busy with a large slice of Lemon Mousse Cake; it also was very good. We hope that we are here in Maine everytime that Frank’s decides to have their rare Mexican Weekend.
It was clear & sunny all day, the wind slowly increasing, the high was 39 degrees. The sun was wonderful & it was beautiful out, but cold during the day. It was 31 degrees & windy when we got back to the RV after dinner, full & happy. We fed the girls & settled in with our books.
