Day 93 – Cloudy this morning, 60 degrees when we got up. Rob sat outside by the cliff & got a few pictures. Then a little later, he finished fixing the RV’s passenger-side side mirrors. That went well, but then, as an afterthought, he checked the driver’s-side mirrors just to make sure they were tight – they had not seemed loose at all when we were driving. There’s also a broken screw on that side which will need to be fixed. A man’s work is never done.

By the time we left at 9:30 to run some errands, the sun was out. It’s going to be a lovely day. We first drove to Lubec, got gas in the Honda, and then went to the Post Office to mail a couple of things & to talk to the Postal Clerk about how we should go about finalizing our new address with them & how to get temporary mail delivery at our land. We’d forgotten to bring our official paperwork with us when we went to the Lubec Post Office on Tuesday, so we had to go back again.
While we were somewhat near our land, we thought we’d drive by & check it out. We wanted to make sure there were no new trees down or any other problems that might cause us difficulty when we move the RV back in next week. We enjoyed the drive to our land. We’ve never been there in early or mid September because we were working previously & always took our two-week vacation in October. It’s really nice this time of year. The weather is generally good, there are few bugs, and stores & restaurants have not begun shutting down after the summer season. Our property looked great & we saw no potential problems. We will have work to do on the land when we’re camped there, but we always do. That’s nothing new; it’s part of the process to make it ours. And there are still two trees that came down last winter to be dealt with. We walked the trails & verified that the trailer pad was in good shape. And while we were there, a friend from down the road stopped by to visit. IT WAS GOOD SEEING YOU, MICHAEL!
Next we drove to Machias for a little shopping. We’d ordered fresh bread to be picked up at Machias Marketplace, and they had plenty of the local farmer’s vegetables, too. We went to the health store for some supplies. But what we were really looking forward to the most was our fish feast which we get at Riverside Take-Out. We’d both been going through withdrawal since the last time we got our fish, in June. We had already decided what we were going to order & it was after 1:00 & we were hungry. They were closed! Not for good, but evidentally one of the two really great guys that own the place was sick. Bummers. No Riverside Monster Fish Plate for us today.
We drove back to the RV; we were hungry & it took awhile because of the road work on Route 1. Finally, after putting up the stuff we’d bought, we got into our new, freshly-baked bread & made sandwiches. What a relief. LOL. We spent what was left of the afternoon in the tent. The Bay was beautiful, as always. Not a cloud in the sky at this point. There was a slight breeze & the high today was 81 degrees.
Today is the NYS Primary. We have a friend who is running for State Senate. We just want to wish her: GOOD LUCK, JEN!
I am sure you are both so happy to be back on your land! Pictures are magnificent!! What are you reading these days? I just finished BENEATH A SCARLETT SKY. A beautifully written historical novel about the horrible things that happened in Italy during WWII. The author interviewed the main character of the book who has since died recounting his amazing heroism from his mid-teens to his early teens. A real adventure packed book. You’d probably both enjoy it.

Hi Gail, I read Beneath a Scarlet Sky as well and really liked it. Mark Sullivan has written quite a few books and I am interested in trying Ghost Dance, Hard News and Labyrinth. Vicki is reading a lot of Louise Penny and loving it! Gamache is her hero!
