Day 12 – Since we were on our own land & didn’t have to check out by a particular time, we didn’t leave until 1:55 p.m. It was 58 degrees and partly cloudy. Once we reached Route 1 and headed north, we encountered lots of road work which slowed things down a bit. Still, we reached Cobscook Bay State Park just 25 minutes later at 2:20 p.m.

This campground is on the Cobscook Bay rather than right off the Ocean; some of the campsites are right on the Bay with deep water while other campsites are in the woods or on the more tidal portions of the Bay, which offers mudfront at low tide & deeper waters at high tide. The birds & wildlife vary accordingly. When we arrived, it was 69 degrees, partly cloudy & breezy. We’d made reservations yesterday for site #7, right on the open water of the Bay. It was only available for three nights and reserved thereafter, so we knew we’d either need to move to another campsite or leave the campground for another destination. Site #7 was perfect!

We unpacked, had lunch, and headed out to the screened tent overlooking the water. The view was wonderful. There are no hook-ups here, so no electricity and no water are at the campsites. There are water spigots and a dump station, however.
We’d stayed in site #8 before and had loved that campsite. But because it wasn’t that hot out and site #8 was surrounded by trees and offered a lot of shade, we preferred site #7 this time since we got more sunlight here. The best campsites at Cobscook Bay State Park are #4, #7, and #8 for privacy, trees, and water views, but site # 116, 5, & 3 aren’t bad either. All these campsites were reserved almost solidly for the summer except for campsite #4 which is one of the non-reservable, first come first served sites they offer. We were watching closely for our chance to grab this site as soon as our reservation for site #7 expired on Monday.
Meanwhile, we spent the entire afternoon at the screened tent. A bald eagle flew over and to a tree on an island in the Bay; hopefully to a nest. It was very quiet and peaceful. This is one of the best campgrounds in the U.S. (in our opinion) for nature, quiet, beauty, and peace. We loved it here years ago and we love it here now.
