AUGUST A. BUSCH MEMORIAL CONSERVATION AREA.
Day 186 – Beautiful day, no wind, clear sunny skies, 41 degrees when we got up. We hung around for a bit, packed a lunch, and went to a great wildlife area about 20 minutes from the campground.
August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is a huge property of almost 7,000 acres in St. Charles County. Fishing is a really big deal here; we often pulled off to the side of the road to let hurried pick-up trucks go by as they raced to their favorite fishing spots. Within the refuge there are many gravel roads. You could spend an entire day just driving slowly on different roads, looking for birds & other wildlife. There are 36 lakes & ponds, 28 of them fishable, totalling 550 acres. Activities include birdwatching, bicycling, hiking, fishing, and hunting in season. There is a shooting range & an archery range. We stopped first at the Visitor’s Center to get a map of the facility. Then we drove to almost every Lake, had lunch at one, and took a short walk on a boardwalk to a blind.
We stopped to visit Gayle at her job and drove back to the RV for a short time before meeting her at a Red Lobster for dinner. Had a good time; got back to the campground at 7:30, boy were we stuffed! The high today was 74 degrees, a nice day.
