Day 24 – We got up at 7:30, looks like another nice day, clear & sunny, 49 degrees. Rob took a bike ride to the lighthouse, then we both walked the Coastal Trail to the cliff overlooking the Ocean. Sat out there a while, very peaceful, then walked back to our campsite on the heavily wooded, well maintained trail.
This campground remains almost full regardless of what day of the week it is. It’s amazing because it’s so quiet here; you’d think you were the only people here. We could stay quite awhile except the dump station is out of order. Tomorrow we go a short distance north for 4 nights at a different spot.
The girls were enjoying some sunlight this afternoon. We hung around & relaxed, then went birdwatching at sites south of here, stopping at several places to hike around. We had picked up an excellent booklet with maps of birding locations throughout Oregon.
We stopped in Port Orford at a fantastic co-op, checking out the fresh produce. We’ll go back the next time we need groceries. We didn’t have a lot of luck with birding but saw some really nice scenery. We drove thru Humbug Mountain State Park, 6 miles south of Port Orford, and checked out the campsites – most of them were too close to their neighbor or too short – the whole park is right next to Highway 101, but it is in a nice location on a mountain that’s almost 2,000 feet tall & goes all the way down to the Ocean.
We went back up to Port Orford & had dinner at Redfish, the wonderful restaurant overlooking the Ocean where we’d had brunch about a week ago. We sat outside, gorgeous out. The service was slow, not enough people working considering the restaurant was almost full, but the food was fantastic, & you couldn’t beat the scenery. We had drinks & an appetizer of Crusted Diver Scallops in a great, tart citrus sauce. Then we split the Southwest Cream of Squash Soup with Poblano Peppers & the Classic Caesar Salad. We split the entree of Fresh Oregon Shrimp & Crab Risotto and finished it up with a TiraMisu & a Capuccino. Perfect. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone travelling this way along the coast.
Back to the RV, catching the end of a great sunset, and relaxed with the kitties until bedtime. The high today was 63 degrees, breezy & sunny. We ran into yet another person from southern CA (Bellflower) who was marveling over the weather. Early October is very nice in coastal OR.
