Day 70 – Nice, quiet campground with lots of trees. We hung out in the RV until 11:30 a.m. and then took our first trip driving ourselves to Louisville. It’s a busy city on the Ohio River, and Indiana is on one side of the River with Kentucky on the other side. We had good directions from Pam and didn’t get lost.

Her neighborhood is nice with tree-lined streets; we took pictures of that and of her house and yard. She has a HUGE tree in the back yard which shades almost the whole yard. Her house is old, I think she said early 1900’s??, and she’s done a lot of work to fix it up while still allowing for the older charm to remain. She’s done the landscaping herself and it reminded us of a small botanical garden. Pam is an artist and some of her artwork is on her walls; her talent also shows in her ability to create this garden haven and in the colors in her home.

We spent some time at her house, then headed out with her to see the area. The Louisville area has many beautiful parks, perfect for hiking, biking, running, and walking dogs. We went to several. She showed us the Ohio River and drove us through wealthy neighborhoods where the houses and acreage were quite large. We went to an animal rescue place but they had just closed for the day; through the fence we even saw buffalo. Then she took us to Foxhollow Farm, a beautiful farm which is also an educational center to encourage people to practice compassionate farming. Their mission is to create a thriving, biodynamic community to teach about  healthy food while strengthening the relationship between human beings, animals, and nature There were hiking trails and we took one down to a small lake. There was a spiritual area with a stonehenge-like Circle of Stones. Really nice.

We drove through an historic area of Louisville and also saw the theatre where Pam recently saw Bernie Sanders speak.

Like mother, like daughter. And we stopped at a place named “Dark Star” to check out kayak rentals, planning to rent a kayak for Pam possibly Wednesday morning and the three of us would go out on the water. Coincidentally, she ran into someone she used to work with when she was exercising race horses at Churchill Downs, home of the first leg of the Kentucky Derby. It’s a small world.

Louisville has lots of good restaurants and we had trouble deciding where to go for dinner, tempted to go back for more pizza, but we opted for a mexican restaurant called, “El Mundo”. Pam had recently been there with friends for her birthday and we have trouble turning down any mexican food. Really, really good! So good, in fact, that we went back two more times after this! Great margarita’s and appetizers, particularly the chipotle bean dip with chips which was only $3 for a healthy portion during happy hour on weekdays. We wanted to try everything on the menu and ended up splitting 3 meals, 3 ways. Honorable mention goes to the plate-sized vegie burrito with sauteed crispy vegetables and the entree-size order of nachos.
We made plans to meet at Pam’s house late tomorrow morning after she got off work, took her home, and stumbled back to the RV, apologizing once again to the kitties for our absence. They forgave us once we fed them. End of Week Ten.
