TRAVEL DAY

From: Silverhorn Creek Campground, Banff National Park, Alberta (AB).

To: Strathmore Highway Camping, Strathmore, AB.

Day 339 – At 6:45 a.m. this morning it was foggy and cloudy. It rained last night. We didn’t know where we’d be staying tonight nor what future plans were, we just knew we were heading east out of the National Parks and hopefully, away from the smoke. We thought we’d try to make it to Calgary, Alberta, then decide whether we would turn south and head towards Glacier National Park in Montana, or continue heading east into the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. It really depended on the smoke and how far we had to go to get out of it.

WILL THE RAIN WASH THE SMOKE AWAY!

Day 337 – It rained most of the day, visibility outside close to zero. It was 45 degrees this morning when we got up. We stayed inside all day. I worked on some paperwork and Rob did some Mr. Fix-It things around the RV. Then we cooked and cooked and cooked. It was a perfect day for it, and for naps. The high today was 59 degrees.

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES.

Day 336 – It was 40 degrees when we got up this morning and smokier than yesterday. We were hoping something miraculous would’ve gotten rid of it. Campers were leaving and the campground was almost empty again – looks like this will be a daily thing. We have no signal here whatsoever. Literature we’d picked up said that there was no internet/cell phone available along the Icefields Parkway. We needed to call and cancel a Banff sightseeing tour that we’d originally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. It’s so smoky, you can’t see the sights.

From: Meadow Campground, Mount Robson Provincial Park, Valemount, BC.

To: Silverhorn Creek Campground, Banff National Park, Alberta (AB).

Day 335 – It’s time to leave Mount Robson and continue with our original plan. The campgrounds in Jasper National Park remain closed. The city still has power. The fire still burns. We’re going to Banff.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES.

Day 327 – It was 53 degrees today and hazy outside with smoke. As the day wore on, we could not see the mountains at all due to the smoke and it smelled like burning wood outside. We have an air quality warning. The high today was 92 degrees which is a nightmare for the people fighting the fire. The wind has not shifted our way, thank goodness. The sun has been shining all day but it hasn’t been able to shine thru the smoke. The picture below is from first thing this morning. Although hazy with smoke, you could still see the mountains from our campsite. By noon, you could not.

JASPER.

Day 326 – We got up early this morning in order to be waiting out front of the registration office at the campground for a tour bus. There are more tours of various kinds offered in the Banff, Jasper, and Lake Louise areas than you can imagine. There are many huge buses on the roads filled with tourists. There are even more smaller van/buses driving around filled with tourists. That, and the sheer number of people here for the holiday weekend, make it difficult to go anywhere – or at least it will be that way for a few days.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Beaverview RV Park & Campground, McBride, BC.

To: Whistlers Campground, Jasper National Park, Jasper, Alberta (AB).

Day 325 – It was 59 degrees at 7:05 a.m. this morning. More campers had come in during the night and the campground was getting busier. We’re leaving – we timed that one right. The Canadians celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in September, also. We’ve got a 3-day weekend coming up.
