HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAPLE!!! SWEET SIXTEEN, MY HOW TIME FLIES!!!
NEWFOUNDLAND – LAST DAY IN LA SCIE.
Day 114 – It was 60 degrees this morning at 7 a.m. with dark skies & a breeze. It stayed fairly windy throughout the day. The rain started at 10:15; we were out in the screened tent until then. We will have been here 8 days when we leave tomorrow. The weather has been wonderful & we’ve really enjoyed our stay – a great town with beautiful scenery, and we considered staying longer. But we still need to visit Labrador! We will come back again.
When I got up a little before 8:00, Rob was sitting with his coffee & camera looking out over the Harbour. He saw a Bald Eagle fly by overhead. The fishermen were Squid Jiggin’ in the water below.
As the day progressed, it rained a little but not for the hours that were originally forecast. We caught up on things, made bread, washed our hair, and tried to do laundry. The campground has a washer & dryer for camper’s use. And with this, here goes another “the wonderful-people-of-Newfoundland story”: the campers from France were doing laundry when the spin portion of the washer broke and their clothes finished washing dripping wet. The campground manager, Beverly, took their clothes home with her & finished off the spin portion, then dried them in her own dryer, delivering the laundry load to the campers, done. She even offered to do our laundry. We told her it could wait. So, the washer was broken and wouldn’t be fixed until tomorrow at the earliest. That’s okay, who wants to do laundry anyway?
With chores complete and still no heavy rain, we spent the rest of the afternoon in the screened tent. Several small fishing boats were out in the harbor with little kids and daddy having a good time. Sunday in NF? We will miss this place! Three campers had departed the campground this morning; three new campers arrived this afternoon. The high today was 72 degrees, some rain and a good breeze.
Island Cove Park: Water Street, La Scie, Newfoundland A0K 3M0 (Route 414 east to La Scie, turn right on the main street & follow it (and the signs) up the hill along the harbor to the end of the road; town website townoflascie@eastlink.ca; Park Manager, Beverly Shea (709) 675-2303 – business, (709) 566-2034 – home, (709) 572-1590 – cell, beverly.shea@live.com – e-mail. Open May 20 to September 30. This is a Town Park. It is located on the northeast side of the community of La Scie. The Park sits on the top of a hill overlooking the north Atlantic Ocean on one side and La Scie’s harbor with the town behind it. We saw whales from the RV windows. Much of the fishing that the town is famous for goes on below you. There are many hiking trails, abundant Gulls & Sea Birds, wildflowers, and lots of peace & quiet. There were 9 RV sites with 20 AMP electrical hook-up and water hook-ups. Half of these campsites have wonderful views. The sunsets from here are amazing. There were also 5 tent or smaller camper sites without services. There was a dump station at the campground, a laundry room, restrooms, shower facilities & small playground. Great customer service. We will definitely stay here again when we come back.
