OUT AND ABOUT.

Day 120 – This morning it was 63 degrees when we got up, the same as yesterday’s high temperature. It was very cloudy – it’s not supposed to rain today, but honestly, they rarely get the weather forecast right. Depending on the weather later, we’ll stay around Port au Choix or go for a drive south.

Driving map, Port au Choix area, 110 miles, 08/17/23

Later – when it didn’t rain and although the clouds remained, we drove to the lighthouse to look for more Caribou (and maybe a hot-dog-eating Fox). We saw neither. We decided to head south for that drive.

Between Port au Choix and Port Saunders, off the 430-28 on a cliff by the ocean, we stopped at a Newfie roadside art installation. The view from there was nice and of course, Rob saw some Seabirds strutting around on the rocks below.

We drove through or stopped at only 3 villages today. There aren’t many south of Port au Choix until you get closer to Gros Morne National Park. We only took pictures at the small village of Bellburns, our favorite of today’s drive. River of Ponds was a nice little town and Hawke’s Bay was fine, a little bigger than River of Ponds, but neither really stood out for us. Bellburns had a great coastline and little cove and a wonderful park which we stopped at, and after walking around and taking pictures from there, we sat on a bench and just enjoyed the view, the clean ocean air, and the wonderful breeze.

After Bellburns, we turned around and headed back to Port au Choix. We drove by the Bakery in town to see if they were open and offering what we’ve heard are, “the best Sticky Buns ever”. They’ll be open on Saturday. We continued driving through town looking for Caribou at the usual places, and meanwhile stopped to take a few pictures, even though we didn’t see any Caribou. YET.

We decided to try the road that leads to the lighthouse once again. After driving to the end of the road and turning around at the lighthouse, we saw a beautiful young female Caribou walking along the road. She wasn’t concerned about us and trotted along beside us, then stopped to drink some water in a puddle.

We went back to the RV and visited with the girls. This morning, most of the campsites emptied out again. When we got back to the campground late this afternoon, many of them were occupied with a new bunch of campers. Very few stay longer than one or two nights. We worked on the blog some, and then we went out for dinner in town. We’d only had protein bars for lunch and were hungry. The restaurant at the Sea Echo Motel was good the last time we were here in 2019. This time they weren’t as good, but adequate. After dinner we took another turn around the lighthouse road. It was around sunset and we thought since it was quieter then, we’d see more. But the Caribou were someplace else. We did take a couple of pictures of the scenery in the late afternoon light. The high today was 67 degrees briefly when we were on the road, and 66 degrees most of the day. It was windy and it still looks like it’s going to rain.
