A FOGGY/SUNNY DAY.

Day 72 – It was gorgeous out when we got up, sunny with no wind, 60 degrees. A little later the fog began rolling in. It was beautiful as the fog came in to cover the cliffs. By 9 a.m., it was very windy & 68 degrees with dense fog. A little later the fog rolled out and it was sunny again. The wind decreased. Ever changing.

Grates Cove, NL

Last night we slept with a window open; we haven’t had to use the heat since getting here. The fog and sun continued changing places throughout the day. We took a short drive in the morning before lunch and spent lots of time in the afternoon outside watching the cove at the campground.

We first drove the few streets in Grate’s Cove, then we drove to a bigger town, Old Perlican, on the western side of the peninsula to refill a propane tank and get gas in the Honda. We had a signal on the phone in Old Perlican, so we called the one restaurant in Grate’s Cove to make reservations for dinner. When we were here in 2019, we ate almost every meal at The Artist’s Studio. The couple who live there, run a B&B, and do the cooking, were very friendly and the food was fantastic. Tomorrow is our anniversary and we’d looked forward to having a special dinner at the Studio. (And probably eat there for lunch and dinner everyday we’re here.) When we called, they were obviously upset, said they’d had to close due to a water issue. They were working hard to get it fixed so they could reopen since they had reservations. They said to call back tomorrow. (Bummers. We were thinking, yeah, IF we have a signal.)

We drove back towards Grate’s Cove, but instead of turning off at the sign for the Cove, we continued on heading to the east side of the peninsula. We drove through the tiny village of Red Head Cove and ended up at Bay de Verde, a larger village, and we stopped at the town park which overlooks a beautiful cove and is surrounded by tall rocky cliffs. We stayed awhile, looking for Whales. The last time we were here, we saw a Minke Whale; this time, no Whales. But it’s a beautiful setting.

Back to the RV, we made lunch and then sat outside. I took a little walk in the general area near to the campground and took some pictures. Later, a Savannah Sparrow sat at the picnic table and posed for pictures. We watched the fishing boats, busy in the harbor, as they unloaded their catches. As it was getting dark, 2 large trucks left the harbor carrying huge containers filled with fish – a quiet little town continues to go about its business.
