HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CATHIE! HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME ON THE ROAD!

TRAVEL DAY

From: Notre Dame Provincial Park, Lewisporte, NL.

To: Peyton’s Woods RV Park & Campground, Twillingate, NL.

Day 53 – It rained hard all night. At 8 a.m. this morning, it was 42 degrees. A bit muddy out. After packing up and dumping tanks, we departed for our next campground at 10:45 a.m. It was 41 degrees, still raining, and the wind was picking up. A nasty day out.

Today we drove to Twillingate, a very popular town on New World Island, where many tourists come during the summer months. We were here in 2019 in late July. The place was packed with people waiting in line for boat trips to go whale watching or to take an Iceberg viewing tour. The Island, being at the end of a peninsula, connected to the mainland by a causeway bridge, the scenery is great (when you can see past the fog). And by the time we got about halfway to Twillingate, we were enveloped in dense fog.

Twillingate is a trendy town to visit. There are many restaurants, some of them very good, gift shops selling local crafts, bed & breakfasts, motels, guest houses, vacation rentals, and inns. School is still in session and the weather is still cold and rainy. It should be much less crowded this time we visit. Once school lets out and people begin their summer vacations, when the weather warms up and the sun comes out, watch out Twillingate!

Our drive from Notre Dame Provincial Park to Twillingate went well. For about half the trip the road was freshly paved, therefore not too much squawking from the girls. The other half was a bit rough. After a brief drive west on the TCH, we headed north on Route 340 and stayed on that road until we reached our campground. The closer we got to Twillingate, the more beautiful the scenery was, what we could see of it. The dense fog had come in. Most of the journey, there were bays on one or both sides of the road. Rocky mountains were visible (barely) in the distance. When we crossed the causeway bridge to New World Island, we saw some ice on the east side – Twillingate is known for the large icebergs that float by near there. The temperature dropped, it stopped raining so hard, the wind picked up, and the fog rolled in. We don’t have nice clear pictures from the drive due to the weather. If the weather clears up while we’re here (5 nights), we’ll be able to show more.

We arrived at Peyton’s Woods RV Park & Campground at 12:15 p.m. It was 37 degrees with dense fog and the wind was continuing to increase. It’s supposed to rain thru Monday night. We had reserved the same campsite we had in 2019, site #46, which is one of the few campsites with some privacy. This is the only campground in the town of Twillingate. Peyton’s Woods offers 64 campsites right in town and near the Ocean. We have electric and water hook-ups. We let the cats out; they know the routine by now and they settled right in. We partially set up camp, made lunch, then finished unpacking. Tomorrow, regardless of the weather conditions, we’ll be going out to the Post Office and to get the portable propane tanks refilled. For the rest of the day today, we will be staying inside. It’s pretty cold and windy out!
