MACHIAS.
Day 11 – It began lightly raining right after we got up this morning and continued on & off until later when it became more steady; 41 degrees this morning and overcast. There’s a storm coming tonight with high wind & large wave advisories for the coastal regions. The high today was 48 degrees. Since it was raining, Rob didn’t go out to the pathway, but we certainly saw plenty of birds later. Weather permitting tomorrow morning, we’ll go to the end of the road and get pictures of the wave action.
We drove into Machias this morning to do laundry, wanting to start off fresh when leaving for Canada. We also got gas in the Honda and went to the bigger market to finish our grocery shopping. Machias is 45 minutes west of us. We took a smaller road rather than the Route 1 route we’d been using. In spite of the rain and clouds, it was still scenic. Spring hasn’t arrived here yet; the buds on the trees are barely visible at this time. Several Osprey nests were occupied.
We went to our favorite place in East Machias for lunch (Riverside Take-Out), and to get their Monster Fish Platter to take home for dinner. They were not open yet and we were disappointed, but “the guys”, Frank & Mark, were there getting ready to open up on the 20th. We chatted with them a bit. They intend to close early October, and we won’t be back here by then. We were lucky we were able to see them this year.
As an alternative, we stopped at the River’s Edge Drive-In, hoping to get similar food. They weren’t nearly as good as Riverside Take-Out. Oh well, lesson learned. Our drive to and from Machias offered plenty of bird sightings: a Wild Turkey, 5 adult Osprey in 3 nests, a Bald Eagle flying from the water to the trees near Bad Little Falls, and at least 20 cormorants sitting on rocks at low tide on East Machias River. Also, seen previously but not yet mentioned – Robins, an Osprey on its nest (in a different location than today), and a pair of Kingfishers.
Back at the RV in the afternoon, the rain increased and the wind picked up a little. We put up the groceries & laundry (with help from the girls), then we baked a loaf of bread for future lunches. It is a whole wheat, nut-seed bread.
Tomorrow is our last day here. Tuesday we leave for Canada. Below are pictures of the kitties.
