PRINCE RUPERT.
Day 310 – We were really dragging today, all of us, cats included. You step out of your routine and everything goes haywire. The campground is okay, not a lot of choices here, but we do have hook-ups (also a lack of privacy and plenty of noise). We took a short drive to familiarize ourselves with the area.
First, because we arrived at this campground in the middle of the night, we did not take campground pictures until this morning.
Prince Rupert is on the mainland of British Columbia right on the coast and way up north. While other areas inland are experiencing a heatwave, Prince Rupert remains foggy and cool. It’s a decent-sized city compared to the many tiny towns we’ve been to, but it is similar in that fishing and logging are big here. Because it houses the BC ferry terminal and port, and a main road ends here (the Yellowhead Highway – Highway 16), the town is fairly busy. We will be taking the Yellowhead Highway across northern BC to Alberta, a different province, and then on to Jasper National Park during the next couple of weeks.
We drove into Prince Rupert to Cow Bay, an area downtown. We stopped at Dolly’s Fish Market to buy some fresh fish (Prince Rupert is known as the Halibut Capital of the World). We also had lunch there: Rob had the Garlic Shrimp Mac n Cheese and I had Halibut Fish n Chips with Caesar Salad instead of the fries. Very good. We bought some fresh fish. Then we drove down the road in Cow Bay to find the location of Prince Rupert Adventure Tours; we have a four-hour boat our scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. We stopped at a grocery store to buy some green onions. And that’s all we did on our trip exploring Prince Rupert. A shame, because it’s a nice city and there’s a good Museum and the whole waterfront to see, plus many buildings have beautiful murals on them, but we were just worn out.
We came back to the RV and napped with the girls. Then, feeling a little better, we cooked, making a large pot of Thai Peanut Sauce to be served for several nights over pasta with Shrimp. The high today was 77 degrees, partly cloudy and breezy.
