TRAVEL DAY

Day 174 – At 8:10 a.m. this morning it was 48 degrees, cloudy, and no wind. The wind and rain are supposed to begin this afternoon. We weren’t in any hurry to leave here since our next campground isn’t very far away and we already have reservations, sight of the campsite unseen.
We departed Boise Cope at 11:55 a.m. after dumping tanks. Most of the route was on Highway 101. Once we were north of Coos Bay, we entered new territory for us. Soon we entered the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. A long stretch of tall, pristine sand dunes runs along the Ocean for 47 miles from Coos Bay to Florence, OR. This area is famous for OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) riding. The Dunes were amazing. I imagine we’ll be able to get some good pictures of them. The ones we got today were just at the beginning and there were other things around the Dunes.
A disadvantage (for us) of all the dune-riding activities is the noise they generate. Most of the campgrounds in this area allow the vehicle riding right from the campground. We reserved a site at our destination, Umpqua Lighthouse State Park because they did not allow the vehicles. Yet from dawn to dusk we can hear the buzz of the vehicles at the beach; luckily here because they aren’t allowed within the Park, it’s a buzz instead of a roar!
We arrived at our campground at 1:35 p.m., after picking up Subway sandwiches for lunch. It was 53 degrees, partly cloudy, and the wind was just starting to pick up. We were very happy when we saw our campsite; we lucked out – it was big enough and there were plenty of trees around us to offer privacy. We had full hook-ups, site #7, reserved for 3 nights. Depending on how long the storm lasts, we may need to add a night or two here. We ate lunch first, then set up camp. The girls like it here, too.
The RV section of this Park was almost full; the tent section was not. It got windier as the day wore on. It started raining at dusk. We stayed inside, and made Beyond Burger Tacos for dinner as we sampled the Bandon Rain Squall Cider.
