Day 170 – At 7:30 this morning it was cloudy and 50 degrees. This time of year, temperatures here don’t change much from morning to night. Rob got a close-up picture of a Robin from the RV’s steps.

We drove to Gold Beach for some errands – had to mail a couple of things at the post office, and we got gas in the Honda ($1.20 less per gallon than we’d paid in CA). We stopped at the Forest Service Headquarters to pick up some maps of Oregon to get info on forest service campgrounds. The information and map we’d gotten recently at the Visitor’s Center when we first entered Oregon, was mostly about the coast. The HQ office was closed but we were lucky to catch a ranger coming from a different building who offered to help. He said that due to lack of funding, the Forest Service could no longer print paper maps but he told us about an App, “Avenza”, which is what they use out in the field. He spent a lot of time with us and was incredibly helpful. We’ve had no signal at the campground, so while we were at the parking lot of the Forest Service HQ and the ranger was setting us up to download some maps to Avenza, we were able to take a look at the upcoming weather forecast and to call and check availability at our next campground. Also, the ranger told us that we should enjoy the quiet at the river campgrounds as much as possible, because fishing season for King Salmon begins Friday and the campground we’re in, and others, will be completely full of fishermen.

We got back to the RV at lunch time, and by the time we finished eating the sun had come out. We sat outside for the rest of the afternoon. A beautiful day (and the wind they’d predicted for today did not come). Tomorrow we’re leaving for another favorite Oregon campground, Boice Cope County Park, near the sand dunes and the Ocean. The weekend is coming again and we need to get there to get a campsite before the weekend visitors arrive. The high today was 60 degrees.
