TRAVEL DAY: BELFAST, MAINE TO FREEPORT, MAINE.
Day 120 – We were up at 6:45 a.m. this morning after a night of rain and thunderstorms. It was 61 degrees and cloudy, still with a little rain. Very humid out. We are driving today from Belfast to Freeport, a short drive and one that allows for relaxation before and after the drive.
We departed Moorings Campground in Belfast at 10:30 a.m. It had stopped raining and was 63 degrees, cloudy and humid. We cannot check in to our next campground until after 1 p.m., and it’s not that far away, so we did a leisurely travel prep this morning and left later than usual.
Because the route we took a couple of days ago upset the kitties’ stomachs, we elected to take a less scenic route today via inland roads to the Maine Turnpike rather than Route 1 through the small towns along the coast with the stop and go traffic and the bumpier roads. The girls appeared to appreciate our decision – no throwing up – YAAAA. We noticed that Fall colors are starting to arrive. Click any picture below to see a slideshow.
After stopping for lunch (teriyaki salmon & spicy Thai yams from the Belfast Co-op) at a rest stop and stopping for gas in the RV, we arrived at our destination in Freeport, Maine at 1:20 p.m. It was 72 degrees and sunny. We are staying at Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping. Those of you who have followed us since the beginning will recognize this campground. It is located at an organic dairy farm, and we really like it here, with the cows coming home twice a day to eat, and the waterfront views along the Bay. We tend to use this campground yearly as a stopover between home and our land.Located just a few minutes from the busy Freeport town center, anything we need is close by. LL Bean claims Freeport as its home base and there are city blocks of various LL Bean stores. Great Inns and Restaurants line the streets along with pottery stores and galleries, furniture makers such as Thomas Moser and Chilton, and plenty of store outlets for those who like to shop. It is a busy destination but camping outside of the main thoroughfare works for us.
We set up camp at Site #111, a pull-through campsite with enough room plus electric and water hook-ups. We had reservations, a necessity during this time of year. We hung around relaxing for a while, then went to town to pick up dinner from the Harraseeket Inn, the place we always get our meals from when we are here. Rob had the Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese and he helped me with the homemade Artichoke Spinach Dip. I had the incredible Lobster Stew and a small Caesar Salad. Tomorrow we have a shopping day in Freeport. The girls did well with their drive today. We are so glad.
