PLOP. PLOP.

Day 102 – Last night was interesting. Once it was fully dark outside we kept hearing this plop, plop, plopping sound out at the Harbor. We’d heard it before, but it was sporadic. We had thought maybe it was the pine cones falling into the Harbor from the trees? Or maybe it was a bird, fishing? Like a Kingfisher diving? This was more often.

Rob went outside with a flashlight to his ManCliff, the best viewpoint over the water. While he was gone, I had my ear pressed to the screen of the window in the RV. I thought he was going to come back saying it’s just someone paddling in a kayak – at pitch-black night? Or maybe it’s a Great Blue Heron fishing from the shore?

Rob came back. He didn’t see anything. The moon was not out, and we wished it was a full moon at that. We went online & looked up what it could’ve been at this particular time of year, in this location, at this tide level – turns out it PROBABLY was the mackerel were running. They were slapping the water – plop, plop, plopping as they migrated. Fascinating.

At the cliff this morning, it was quiet. We’d hoped we could see this mackerel phenomena during the daytime, but no, all was still. Rob only got a picture of his mushroom that is evolving – the anatomy of a mushroom. Click any picture below to see a slideshow.

It was cool today, no complaints, a nice day with a high of 67 degrees. We turned the heat on again this morning in the RV. The girls love it. Rob has almost finished the projects he had planned to work on here – just waiting for a couple of things he’d ordered. Not one to sit still for long, he went out and spent the afternoon removing dead trees, two of which were large and very hard work. I continued making progress on my projects, and we celebrated the progress we’d made with wine and beer this evening, followed by Crab Imperial over Brown Rice with fresh Cauliflower. YUM. (Thanks again, Diane, for this recipe; we know you’re missing Betty’s Crabmeat.) Another good day!
