KAYAKING ORANGE RIVER.
Day 76 – A beautiful day today with a high of 70 degrees and lots of sunlight. It was 55 degrees when we got up. Rob didn’t take any pictures when enjoying his coffee at the cliff, but he heard three Kingfishers calling to each other as they were fishing in the Harbor.
A little bit after we finished our morning beverages, we decided to try out the boat launch at the Orange River and do some kayaking. It was a perfect morning for paddling. The Orange River is in Whiting and part of it runs along Route 1. The boat launch was easy in/easy out. No one was there. The water was a deep brown, not that deep, and quite shallow in some places. The river appeared to be very clean; we could clearly see the water plants growing below us. One of the great things about kayaks is they are so low to the water, you are floating close to the surface. And you can paddle where it’s very shallow. There were no homes and not a soul in sight. We kayaked along the shores seeing plenty of dragonflies, flowers & lily pads, three beaver dams, several turtles, and several ducks. The wind picked up and we paddled against it (good exercise) for the first half, and let the wind take us back for the second half of our trip. It was very nice. After lunch & our showers, we went out to the screened tent. We saw Kingfishers fishing and Osprey flying overhead. Several trees were heavy with pine cones. A squirrel yanked a whole mushroom out of the ground and ran away with it. Around 5:00 we went inside and made Margaritas. We took them back out to the tent. We talked about where we are going to go on our next RV trip, one which we hope will allow us to travel for many months without planning too much in advance. But much of that depends on what COVID does. It ain’t over yet. Our Margaritas perfectly complimented our dinner of nachos. The end to a nice day!
