MORNING ON THE LAKE.
Day 38 – It’s supposed to rain late this afternoon. Very cloudy this morning with some wind, 60 degrees. We took the kayaks to Little Diamond Pond, the lake within walking distance from our campsite. No one was there. First time this visit here that there were no fishermen at the lake in the morning; no boats on the Pond.
It was incredibly peaceful. We just paddled around, us and the eagles and the loons. When we first got out on the water, it was like glass; the wind soon picked up but it wasn’t bad. It was the first time we’d ever seen a loon sleep. At first they were paddling, heads up, from one side of the lake, then when they reached the middle they lowered their heads, kind of turned & tucked into their wings, and just floated, eyes closed, not worried about us or anything else. I was doing the same thing, resting, just floating in the middle of the lake. Two Bald Eagles flew overhead. Later at one end of the lake, we saw something white at the top of a tree in the distance. Rob paddled over to the other side of the lake & there was one Bald Eagle in the tree. It saw Rob but didn’t feel threatened and just sat there, resting. It was that kind of morning – restful. We were out there for about an hour and a half before people arrived in droves. Fishermen in ATVs, coming to fish from the side of the lake, a family that had been camping brought their poles down, pick-up trucks with fishing boats. Time for us to leave the lake. It was a perfect morning.
Back at the RV, 64 degrees, it rained for about an hour. We had lunch and when the rain continued, we figured it was going to be that kind of afternoon. Our morning kayaking was great timing! We zipped up the tent and covered the bikes with a tarp. For a Saturday, it was quiet, the campground wasn’t even 1/3 full, probably due to the weather and the upcoming holiday weekend when most people would be traveling. Earlier we’d taken a walk around the campground. We’d seen that almost all campsites would be full over the 4th of July weekend. Future reservations are posted at each site.
We remained inside as the rain continued to come down all afternoon. We baked some scallops in a lemon, garlic, caper sauce for the next several nights. We played Uno. I finally won. The high was 64 degrees, although it was forecasted to reach 80, and rain was not scheduled until later in the day. You just can’t count on the weather forecast.
We recorded this audio of the loons calling over the lake in the evening.
