BUG AVOIDANCE.
Day 7 – Today was spent avoiding the bugs. In addition to the biting black flies, the mosquitoes have arrived. We spent most of the day in the screened tent overlooking the Lake. Disappointing because we’d wanted to do more kayaking, but it IS that time of year after all!
No pictures were taken today, but there was a decent amount of activity around the campsite. We heard Loons calling back & forth around the Lake. A Barred Owl was hooting away last night and today. Ducks flew in and were honking. Robins and Squirrels ran around the tent, foraging for food – one Robin caught a Dragonfly so large he/she couldn’t swallow it. Yellow Butterflies flitted about. Woodpeckers pecked away on the trees, and Fish jumped in the Lake. We napped in the tent and read our books. Yawn!
Later in the afternoon, I went inside to take my shower & wash my hair. When Rob came in for his shower, he told me about some exciting events. He was reading in the tent. A Bald Eagle flew in and landed high in the tree in front of the tent. It wouldn’t have done any good to try to get pictures. The branch that the Eagle landed on broke and fell into the water below, and the Eagle flew off. Soon after that, a Bald Eagle dove into the water right in front of the tent and surfaced with a fish in its talons. The Eagle flew away to enjoy its dinner. And Rob enjoyed his close encounters!
It had rapidly gotten warmer & humid and continued to get warmer until it rained a little around 4:30 p.m. Rob packed up the screened tent since we’re leaving tomorrow, and there’s supposed to be heavier rain and some thunderstorms later.
The girls slept all day; they were warm. We have the fans on for this evening, at least until thunderstorms break the humidity. Tomorrow we head for our land. We’re looking forward to seeing how everything made it through the winter.
