NEWFOUNDLAND – SATURDAY IN THE PARK.
Day 148 – We slept in this morning. It was 49 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. It had rained during the night. The clouds burned off by noon & the sun came out. We’d planned to drive to other parts of Gros Morne today, but by the time the weather cleared & we got up and running, we cancelled that idea to stay home in the RV, do some cooking for future dinners, and catch up on the blog (which always seems to get behind whether we have a signal or not).
This Park, Berry Hill Campground, has been great. We’re sure during July & August it must be a zoo here. We have had privacy at Berry Hill & the campers coming & going have been great. We did spy one child today riding a bike through the campground, but for the most part, fall camping in NF becomes an adult thing, once the kids are back in school. People come all the way to NF just to go to Gros Morne & St. John’s, and maybe see an iceberg or a whale in between. There is SO much more to this Canadian province than the National Park & the biggest city.
This September in NF has been 50/50 weather-wise. People have been saying this hasn’t been a normal September. It is normally warmer, not so windy & not so much rain, everyone’s favorite month. They also say it was a very cool, rainy summer and a TERRIBLE winter, and that spring was almost non-existent. People here mention concern about global warming/climate change about as often as they ask you where you are from. Fall is here. We’re beginning to see some color in the trees. The grasses that cover the fields have gone from green to a golden-red. Ground covers are turning either red or yellow. We’ve heard that fall colors here at Gros Morne National Park are spectacular. (But we have seen Vermont at peak color in the fall & where we live in NY is pretty gorgeous in the fall, too.) We are looking forward to see which place wins out. Can Newfoundland beat Vermont?
Which brings us to our current change of plans; oh no, not again, I say, planner that I am; what will we have for dinner, LOL. Since fall seems to have its peak colors where we live in mid-October, we figured peak colors here this far north would be mid-September. Wrong. People are saying that Gros Morne peaks in mid-October. That is when we thought we’d leave NF, heading for Maine. We do want to see these fall colors, so rather than stay up here the entire month, we’re thinking about leaving this wonderful Park early, hoping we get some kind of refund since we’d already paid for a two-week stay. We would go south to several areas we have not yet explored, then come back up here towards peak fall colors in mid-October. Since the weather is slated to be lousy again beginning Monday, why not leave after we have the car work done in Corner Brook on Monday and experience the more southwestern areas of NF. The only problem will be our mail – we can’t leave here until it arrives. Stay tuned to see what we end up doing. You’ll be the first to know.
