LABRADOR – LAZY LAST DAY IN LABRADOR.
Day 139 – The weather has changed yet again. Rain last night & this morning; it was 47 degrees when we got up. It is very cloudy with no wind; the bugs did not magically leave. We are taking it easy today, nursing our aching knees & backs. At some point we’ll need to go out & get propane for the RV. Tomorrow we will leave to go back to Newfoundland. We hope the weather will be nice for the ferry ride. When we came over here on August 31, there were high winds, rocking waves, and dense fog when we arrived. Little did we know we’d encounter an Atlantic hurricane!
Later – not much happening here. After lunch we went out to get propane in L’Anse au Loup. Partly cloudy, some dark clouds, low wind, 57 degrees. On the way back to the RV, we turned off the paved road (between Forteau & English Point) at a sign advertising First Pond Municipal Park. We’d seen this sign before & wondered about the Park. In less than a mile we reached a nice lake (First Pond, I guess); the road ended at a beach where you could launch a kayak. There were a couple of picnic tables and fire pits. Also there were four campsites. Each was nice & private. No hook-ups of any kind. NOTE TO SELF: If needed as an alternative when we visit again, remember First Pond Municipal Park, Forteau. Back at the RV we did a few things to get ready for leaving tomorrow; there’s no rush since we don’t have to be at the ferry terminal until noon. It rained during the afternoon. We’re still hoping for a nice day tomorrow.
As a final tribute to Labrador’s impressive Black Fly population (Thanks Mark and Donna!)
Northern Light Inn & RV Campground: 82-86 Main Highway (Route 510), L’Anse au Clair, Labrador A0K 3K0; (709) 931-2332; e-mail northernlight@nf.sympatico.ca; website www.northernlightinn.com. Opens May 1 & closes late October (weather permitting). The campground is conveniently located 5 km north of the ferry dock in Blanc Sablon, Quebec, and is across the road from the Northern Light Inn. There is a restaurant & pizza take-out at the Inn. The campground offers 14 campsites, all with full hook-ups. 11 sites are 30 AMP; 3 sites are 50 AMP. There is a laundry room, restrooms & showers, and a dump station if you don’t want to use the individual campsite sewer hook-ups. We camped here off-season (during the 2nd week in September) and it wasn’t crowded. Most campers that came in were stopping over either before or after the ferry ride. Reservations were not needed. The campground is in the middle of a small town; even though it’s not far from Route 510, the traffic noise is minimal. From our site on the hill, we could look out over the harbor. $34.50 per night, Canadian currency. We would stay here again. Very convenient.
