NEWFOUNDLAND – PORT AU CHOIX TO RALEIGH.

Day 121 – Still windy last night but not as bad, we got up early this morning to get an early start for our trip north where the winds would be picking up in the afternoon. We wanted to get the driving done before it got too windy. At 6:40 a.m. it was 49 degrees.

We departed Oceanside RV Park at 8:40 a.m. after dumping tanks. It was 59 degrees, sunny & windy. We made this journey last May; it sure looked different this time. Last May as we drove further north along the water we were so surprised to see that the pack ice was nearly solid and this far south. And when we got closer to the northeastern side of the Northern Peninsula last May, there was more & more snow on the ground. It had been so early in the season, to our surprise, only one campground was open & just barely, with its roads not completely plowed & and many facilities not up & running yet. Pistolet Bay Provincial Park, the place we’d wanted to stay had its’ opening date pushed back for weeks due to all the snow on the ground. Now we get to stay at Pistolet, the skies are sunny & the temperatures are warm. Too bad the icebergs are gone, though.

The drive was fine & the Ocean waters were choppy with big waves breaking due to the windy condition. The sun was shining & places that were closed before were open now. The road was still rough with potholes. I guess they can’t fix every road, every year. There still wasn’t much traffic, but certainly more people vacationing, we could see that. NOTE TO SELF: We passed a sign that pointed to RV Parking in Flowers Cove – call the town hall and get details for the future.

We arrived at Pistolet at 11:25 a.m., were allowed to drive through the Park & pick a campsite, and got site #29. There are 30 campsites total – a small campground – conveniently located not too far from the Viking sites we hope to visit since everything is open this time of year. There are no hook-ups. No electricity. Water & a dump station at the campground, not at individual campsites. Some of the sites were occupied, some were reserved; we still had plenty to choose from. Site #29 was private, surrounded by trees, and large enough for the RV, tow car, and the screened tent.

We had our lunch, set up camp, and spent most of the afternoon in the screened tent. It was fairly windy, but the tall trees all around blocked a lot of the wind. We have no cell phone nor an internet connection once again. The high today was 70 degrees & mostly sunny.
