Day 138 – We were nervous during the night about the wind & the potential for trees to come down. It’s pitch black at night unless it’s clear out with a full moon. The forecast was for 25 MPH sustained winds with gusts to 50 MPH. I woke up around 1 a.m. The wind was howling & it was raining hard. The power hadn’t come back up. We were getting heat from propane, so the lack of electricity was not an issue in that respect, but the kitties had lost their warm electric pads & were awake and unhappy. Except for Luna who was asleep under the covers.
I got up at 4:30 to check on things. Still pitch-black out, windy & heavy rain. I saw the power was back; the nightlights were on. The electric pads for the girls were cold still, so the power hadn’t been back up for long. At 7:15 Rob got up. I was sleeping hard. Raining lightly, still windy but not as bad, cloudy/foggy, 43 degrees. He took his coffee out & walked the trails, checking for damage. Two trees down; he took pictures. Some damage to one of the paths where the roots pulled up out of the ground. We were thankful no trees fell on the RV.

Rob carved our pumpkin in a non-traditional way: the RV & a Spruce Tree. Gracie & Luna were to be thanked for all of their helpfulness. Java wanted no part of it; Pixie was blissfully unaware of the activities.

The Harbor was muddy again like after the last heavy rain; it’ll probably take a few days to clear up once the water stops flowing off the hills. The weather radio said there would be coastal flooding from the storm surge two hours before high tide to about two hours after high tide. Suzanne called to check in; reported they had no trees down & got by last night with kerosene lanterns & candles. She said Michael had gone out this morning & saw that trees were down in other areas on the peninsula. The power company website showed current power outages from Stonington & Blue Hill along the coast to inland up beyond Millinocket. Guess this was a big storm!
Around 2:30 we went out to the beginning of the road to dump our trash & check the mail box. Then we drove back, past our property to see how other areas had fared. We stopped at Smith Beach to look at the high tide coming in. We saw MUCH larger waves than we’d ever seen there before. Driving further, a group of trees had fallen along the harbor side of the road. and another large tree was down & partly in the road on the opposite side. We stopped at the “T” in the road & went out on the Rollins’ deck to look at the waves. They were crashing on the rocks below. Thank you Dick & Lil.
The wind & rain had died down, drizzle & wind gusts occasionally – foggy, cloudy & very wet out, a high today of 52 degrees. The girls were lazy in the afternoon, they were awake much of last night & the pumpkin carving was just too exciting for at least two of them. Just before it got dark, Rob saw a Bald Eagle flying over the Harbor. Then he saw another one sitting high up in a tree across the Harbor – both seen from inside the RV – that’s a new experience for us.

Thanks Gail! If you’ve been following along, you may have noticed that we have ordered a metal sign to put out at the driveway. The pumpkin was an attempt to copy some of what will be on the sign. We are expecting to get the sign shortly and will be posting pictures.
