Day 129 – More snow flurries blowing by in the wind late yesterday afternoon. Windy & cold this morning, 35 degrees. Rob needs a warmer jacket if he’s gonna sit outside in the mornings. These days it’s just been a quick walk out & back with his coffee. Got some stuff to do in town today, so we bundled up & headed out. We had a very nice, busy day.
The 40-pound propane tank that we’d bought a month ago for use at the land, finally ran out of fuel a couple of days ago. We’ve been using the smaller propane tank that’s within the RV since then. We use very little propane except when using it to heat the RV, but due to this colder weather, we’ve been using lots more fuel. If we didn’t have the larger tank situated outside the RV, we’d be packing up the RV & driving it into town to refill the smaller tank on a weekly basis. With the new 40-pound tank, we just toss the tank into the car and drive to town, get it filled, bring it back to the RV & reconnect the tank. Nice & easy, and certainly not weekly!
We took the propane tank into Lubec & dropped it off to be filled. We went to the Clutter Shop, the nice antique store & barn near town. We’d never been there, and we wanted to take a look around. Rob is trying to find an old bracket which he will use for hanging our sign. (This is the house sign to be hung where we’ve put the post with our house number at the beginning of the driveway. He designed it on the computer & we’re having it made at Etsy. We should receive it in about 2 weeks.) He has some specific ideas of exactly what he’s looking for. Unfortunately, I’m not a big help. I’m more of a visual person, and have found that when trying to visualize this whole project, I need to see the actual sign being held up at the post before I can figure out what will look best, where to hang it, and how to hang it, etc. Meanwhile, I sure don’t mind tagging along with him to antique stores looking for an old bracket! This was a fun little adventure.
We spent quite a while there, Rob looking upstairs, downstairs, and in the barn, in corners & little nooks & crannies for brackets. I had fun looking at old indian baskets, beautiful china & glassware, old quilts and every kind of knick-knack that you could imagine. He found a couple of things, including an old oxen yoke that could be used to connect along the top of the post & a couple of brackets that were too intricate for my taste. He opted to look at other antique shops for other ideas, and took pictures of the things he’d found.
We drove into Lubec to Sally Ann’s Cafe for lunch. It was good. I was hoping for the Quiche or the Fritatta I’d had for breakfast the last time we were there. Their menu changes daily based on what’s available, and they didn’t offer these items today. We had Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. You have choices for breads & kinds of cheese, plus the items you might like added to your sandwich. We both had 21-grain bread, cheddar cheese, pesto, tomato, and grilled onion. I also had the addition of chopped kale. Their coffee is excellent, too. While we were there, Suzanne called & asked if we wanted to go out to dinner. Hey, why not; we haven’t been going out much lately! Rob told her that we were looking at antique stores for brackets & she offered up several good ideas of places to go. At the Cafe, we were talking to a woman who was from Illinois. She & her husband visit relatives in Lubec yearly. She said that last year they were here for Christmas & it was 15 degrees below zero. When we left the Cafe, it seemed much warmer out after that conversation.
Back to the RV after picking up the filled propane tank, it was already after 2 p.m. 48 degrees & windy, mostly cloudy. A little after 5:00, Michael & Suzanne picked us up for dinner; we went into town to Frank’s. They have good food, reasonable prices, a variety on the menu, and it’s a favorite place of many of the people from around here. Several people we’ve eaten with here previously have said that they serve the best veal dishes anywhere. We both got fish (what else is new) – Rob, the Baked Haddock; I got the Seafood Cobain which was scallops, shrimp, & crab en casserole. We split a decadent piece of chocolate cake. Michael & Suzanne loved their veal, as usual. Thanks, M&S for the company and for inviting us!
