Day 58 – It’s 9:30 a.m. & pouring down rain. Thunder has Java, the scaredist kitty, scattering for her hiding place under the chair. The weather forecast changed completely, though, from all-night rain last night plus all-day rain today to just an hour’s rain from 9 to 10 (right now). Judging from the amount of rain coming down, the entire long storm previously forecasted has gathered into one heavy, short storm! Rob got up at 6:30; it was cloudy & humid & 67 degrees. He took a long bike ride – well, it was mostly a bike ride, but the “Moose Corridor Trail” was not maintained, muddy, & rocky, suited for moose but not completely suited for biking. The rain had started & he arrived back at the RV soaking wet. I thought about tossing him out with the garbage, but then determined he was not a wet rat, but Rob!
It had stopped raining by 10:30. Quite muddy out. We paid for 3 more nights here, lucky to have this campsite available to us since all the campgrounds around here were completely booked for the weekend. The people camping next to us have an elaborate system of tents & tarps set up, almost like a small home with several rooms. They were protected from the rain. Even though the campsites here are divided by trees, you can hear people’s conversations, and I’m sorry to admit, we’ve had a few laughs on their behalf because of this closeness. They’ve probably had a couple of laughs on us, too. Last night, the couple “next door” were sitting outside drinking alcohol (obviously we believe there’s nothing wrong with that!), and he said, “Do you want another drink?” and she shouted, “FILLING IT NOW!”, and we cracked up. The sites across from us & on the other side of us are currently empty; check-in time is 1 p.m. & after that we will probably see (and hear) what is in store for us over the weekend. We’re waiting for the sun to come out & for it to dry out a bit. Then we venture out.
Okay, fast forward to the evening: we just got back from dinner out at a restaurant called, “Parkside” on Main Street in Rangeley across from the Post Office. Very good food, good service, and a lovely setting overlooking Rangeley Lake. Rob had Beer; I had a Margarita, and we started with the Crab Artichoke Dip. This was not your standard, typical, run-of-the-mill Spinach Artichoke Dip which is served in lots of places. This had no spinach; it had big chunks of crabmeat & artichokes in their special alfredo-like sauce and it was awesome. Served with little buttered & toasted pieces of bread with shaved parmesan cheese on them. For dinner we ordered the Seafood Alfredo which was lobster, scallops, and shrimp over thick noodle-pasta in alfredo sauce, and the special of the day – Poached Salmon Salad – which was a large piece of poached salmon served warm & cooked perfectly over a lettuce, green pepper, red onion, grated carrot salad covered with a homemade Maine Blueberry Vinegarette. We split these dishes & both were really good. We got a piece of the homemade Double-Crusted Maine Blueberry Pie, warmed. An excellent meal. We would go back there again!
This afternoon after lunch we went outside and read our books in the screened tent. Gorgeous out, the storms have cleared out the humidity and it is quite comfortable. After dinner, we stopped at a Rangeley Lake overlook to get a few pictures of the Lake. This evening should be much more comfortable than it’s been the last few nights. The high today was 75 degrees.
