Day 139 – Okay, so I’m re-evaluating my initial opinions of the desert. I’m totally a tree-hugger & really had no desire to travel through or stay at desert sites, thinking they were just barren, flat, sandy places of no color other than shades of dry brown. Wrong.  We paid the campground hosts for an additional 2 nights, and we may stay longer than that, who knows?  (The same thing happened when I was dreading the so-called flat & boring middle States.  Wrong again.  Not all flat and certainly not all boring.  The U.S.A. has so much diversity and variety to discover.  Slap me silly next time I am Captain Bringdown saying I don’t want to go here or there!)  We love it here.

We were up at 6:45 a.m. again, 30 degrees out, sunny.  Rob caught up with his pictures for the blog and I did some more catching up with the writing.  Then we went to Blythe, the closest big city, about 20 miles away to get gas in the Honda and pick up some bread & almond milk from the grocery store. When we eventually arrived back at the RV we passed the Canadian, English, Scotch-Irish couple who were taking a walk & getting some exercise. They told us that they were eventually heading to some Parks & BLM campsites in southeast Arizona, an area which we were considering going to next. This conversation confirmed that this may be a good choice for our next adventure.

We made lunch, then headed back to the Wildlife Refuge to drive through the Auto Tour again. We’ve found that it’s never the same from one time to another, and it’s worthwhile to visit an area more than once. This time we saw a few new birds and again, thousands of Sandhill Cranes. As we were leaving, the Snow Geese arrived en masse. We were happy to get to see it again (even though we still did not get a good picture of Vermilion Flycatchers).

Arriving back at the RV, we were happy to see that no one is camping close to us even though it’s the weekend. We briefly sat outside until it got dark, then made dinner & read our books. Another great day, high of 71 degrees, sunny.
