Day 86 – Here Comes The Sun.
37 degrees last night & less clouds this morning at 8 a.m. Could this be a little sun peeking out & paying us a visit? Gracie & Java are a little irritable; maybe they’re getting stir crazy, too. Rob spent the morning with his coffee, the internet, & some maps – studying places where the flowing water might be less rough (we are not white-water kayakers). When I got up, he had a route all ready to show me which looked great & was not too far from the area we’d wanted to drive to anyway, around St. Regis Falls. We’ll drive over there, equipped with the kayak gear, just in case the weather & water are fine.
It clouded up again later in the morning with those beautiful white, fluffy clouds, not the angry storm clouds we had been seeing. We decided to take the drive to St. Regis Falls & beyond. It was obvious when we entered the Adirondacks with all the hilly terrain. Very beautiful out. We took small winding roads, some of them just dirt roads, trying to stay close to the St. Regis, and later, the Deer River. St. Regis Falls was a small town similar to Brasher Falls, the town we’re camping in, and the River raged through it, also. We went away from the River and into the deep woods to a restaurant off the beaten path, Deer Valley Trail Restaurant & Lodging. It was excellent & was part of an area with cabins for hikers, fishermen, ski & snowshoeing people, etc. No camping, though, but if we didn’t have an RV, we’d definitely stay there. We drove over to the Deer River boat launch that Rob had found, and checked out a couple of other kayaking possibilities, too. The first one was the best & we’ll give it a try earlier in the day, probably on Friday. We headed back to the campground on a great, scenic road, Red Tavern Road, running across another campground which we checked out & will look into on the internet. Also, great views when you could see thru the trees, and we even saw some buffalo at a farm.
The sun did come out later in the afternoon & it stayed out awhile. When we got home, we opened the windows for the first time in awhile which perked up the cats, and we sat out by the River some, but the warmer weather had brought out the little biting black flies that we in the North dread. These were just coming out after the cold spell and not biting yet, thank goodness, but it won’t be long at all before it’ll be miserable out. We’d found the pathway down to the River and went down there, walking out on the rocks. The St. Regis River up close as it rages by is quite formidable.

We walked over to the Riverview Restaurant, which is conveniently near to the campground; we’d noticed their parking lot was crowded every night. It was a nice place & the food was good enough, everything from prime rib & fresh fish to pizza & sandwiches, plus a full bar. The restaurant was crowded for a Wednesday evening, & they”re almost finished building a large, new deck for outdoor seating on the River. I imagine they will fill that area, too.

We walked back to the campground with enough leftover food for another meal, cuddled up with the cats and fell asleep early.
