Day 29 – 6:45 a.m., clear & windy, 35 degrees. We could only get our campsite for 2 nights so we’re moving on today. Too bad ‘cuz this is a really nice campground. But maybe the one we check into this afternoon will be, too. Hopefully other Georgia State Parks will be as good since we’re planning on staying at several of them.
Departed Skidaway Island State Park 11:05 a.m. The drive was uneventful and not too long. Arrived at Crooked River State Park (near St. Mary’s, GA not far from the Florida border) at 1:30 p.m. There’s a freeze warning for tonight.
Crooked River State Park, St. Mary’s, GA
Well, Georgia is 2 for 2; this is another great Park for camping. We had wanted to stay here for five nights originally but they were booked and could only give us a site for two nights. We ended up with a wonderful site (#24), private and nothing but forest in front of us. While Rob unpacked and set us up, I went back to the check-in station and asked if there happened to be any cancellations, and could we possibly stay another night or two. Well, yes, someone had just cancelled and we could stay 2 more nights if we wanted to, so we are “happy campers”.
Site 24, Crooked River State Park, St. Mary’s, GA
Had lunch (no Jersey Mike’s, couldn’t find one and went to Jimmy Johns instead to get our travel sandwiches to go before we left). Won’t be lazy next time and WILL find Jersey Mike’s! 50 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, drove around and checked out our surroundings. Very large Park, many hiking and biking trails – we walked the short River Trail which took us out to Crooked River, a large and fast-moving (current-wise) River which borders half the Park. There are supposedly manatees and dolphins in the River. There are a number of cabins right on the River and views of it from some campsites; the River is just beyond the forest at our site. There’s a nature center and a birdwatching & photography blind, a pond, and on one side the campsites are fairly close together even though there are trees in between the sites; the other side, where we are, the sites are large and nicely separated from each other.
The girls had settled in nicely after some complaining on the ride here. All were happily looking out the windows, checking out the new scenery when we got back from our drive.
