Day 13 – Woke up to sunny skies and mild wind. Rob was up at 6:00 to make his coffee and head to the beach with the camera to catch the sunrise. What he caught were knobby-knee’d Willits and some Pelicans hunting for breakfast.

Breakfast at the beach!
I opted to catch the sunrise from bed, opened the shade to the window and promptly went back to sleep. I woke up at 7:15 when he came back to the RV – 48 degrees.
We took showers and hung around for awhile; determined it was too cool and windy to sit out. Took a drive South to check out what was below the campground. We drove to the end of the road where a ferry takes people to Ocracoke Island. The Outer Banks continue from there.
At the end of the road (NC Route 12 South) there’s the “Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum” which looked interesting but it was closed. (In the South almost everything is closed on Sunday.) With these islands offshore of the mainland, many ships and crewmembers have met their deaths here. Oh, and then there’s the pirate lore………..

We walked around the area and then headed back North to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Beautiful! From what we heard and read: This lighthouse is the most-photographed lighthouse in the World. Due to erosion of the sand and the encroaching waters, the lighthouse was moved in 1998/1999 to its current location. The job of moving the lighthouse was tremendous; it was moved on rollers, an inch at a time, and it took nearly 2 years to complete the move. Now the sand and water are encroaching again from the other side. Beginning June and continuing thru the Summer, people can climb to the top of the VERY tall lighthouse, for a fee.
We drove to the site where the lighthouse was previously located – it wasn’t very far away and it was such a feat to move it – we can’t imagine it being done again!
Headed North back to the campground; woke the kitties up, apparently they all slept the whole time we were gone. 53 degrees and windy. Tried to sit outside but it wasn’t comfortable out. Good day – we’ll see what tomorrow brings us.
