STRONG WINDS.

Day 137 – It was 63 degrees this morning when we got up. The wind gusts remained strong thru the night. Because of the winds, the car and RV windows appear fogged up all the time. They’re not – it’s the salt water coating everything with sea spray. The winds increased this morning and it wasn’t even comfortable to leave the RV, it was blowing so strongly. The RV was doing a bit of rocking. Supposedly the winds will decrease tonight.

Tomorrow we’ll be leaving Port au Choix, heading south to incredibly beautiful Gros Morne National Park. It shouldn’t be as windy there, but rain is expected later this week. We’ll be there almost two weeks, so odds are we’ll see some good weather. Here, though, it’s been so windy that the fishing boats haven’t even gone out.

Fishing and the Sea

“The sea’s pervasive presence is felt throughout Atlantic Canada, but the ties to the Ocean are perhaps strongest in Newfoundland, whose outer coast confronts the open Atlantic. The waters off Newfoundland in particular – the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Grand Banks along the continental shelf – are among the most productive fisheries in the world, for five centuries an unbelievably rich resource for tuna, mackerel, herring, cod, and lobster.” from Moon Handbooks, Atlantic Canada, 5th Edition, 2009

Later: We hung out at the RV all day catching up on some things and waiting for the wind to die down. The forecast changed and so did our plans. Instead of decreasing, the wind gusts increased. Now it will be dangerous for us to drive the RV around here in the conditions they’re predicting for tomorrow. We’ll have to be out of here as early as we can tomorrow morning. Therefore we aren’t doing the Moose/Fox/Caribou drive tonight, instead going to bed earlier than usual. We’ve got enough pictures. We phoned the campground we’ll be staying at next about the possibility of us checking in early tomorrow. Unfortunately, there’s someone in our campsite until 11 a.m. at the latest. So we’ll just hang out at the Gros Morne Visitor’s Center parking lot until we can check in. No big deal.
