COLD!

Day 54 – It rained hard all night and the low temperature was 33.8 degrees. We have a few errands to run in Twillingate today and will probably go out around lunch time. Right now it’s only 35 degrees and it’s still fairly windy. I don’t think we’ll be doing much more outside than the errands.

Later: It’s now 2 p.m. I thought I should write this down before falling asleep; Rob is already napping. The cats never stopped.

We’re back in the RV after running our errands. We went into town to get gas in the Honda and propane to bring back to the RV. Rob got the portable propane tanks filled outside in the blowing wind & rain. A big gust of wind blew, and a bunch of water from the top of the propane service shack dumped onto the attendant’s head. The attendant, who had such a heavy NL accent that Rob could barely understand him, said “I hate this fokin rain.” Rob asked, “Is this more rain than usual?” And the attendant said, “Oh yah. Last year we hardly had water to keep the town’s storage tank full, and this year there’s too much water everywhere. I hate this fokin rain.” He also said a bunch of other things that Rob couldn’t undertand. Rob just stood there nodding his head, uh huh, uh huh.

We went to the Post Office to mail a couple of things and pick up our mail which had been forwarded from Florida. Then we drove to the other side of the Bay to see if our favorite Twillingate restaurant, Canvas Cove Bistro, was open. It was not, but on the way there, we saw several large icebergs in the bay. Rob braved the weather again to get a few pictures. It was 35 degrees (wind chill 23 degrees), raining, foggy, and windy.

We stopped at Annie’s Harbour Cafe for lunch. We’d never been then before, but we’d seen that their large parking area was always full. Even though it was a Monday and the weather was lousy, they were busy. We had the Crab Dip first, then we split a Lobster Roll and Fish Tacos; we brought Cheesecake back to the RV for dessert tonight. The food was excellent and the Cafe sat right on the water by the bay (looking at the icebergs through the fog that kept rolling in & out). At least it was warm inside!

We asked our server about the weather and she said, “The days of solid rain and the constant wind were not normal this time of year. It just keepsa goin’ on & on, ya know.” She said, “Some people tells ya the cold is from the icebergs, but it’s really the wind blowin’ down from the Labrador. Them folks don’t know what they’re talkin’ about.”

We drove north past the campground entrance to Crow’s Neck where the lighthouse is located overlooking the Ocean. We wanted to get closer to the icebergs, but we’ll have to go back when the weather clears to get a better look. We remembered going to the lighthouse in 2019 but the parking lots were full of people from the tour busses. It’s not nearly as crowded now with the weather near freezing, LOL.

And later still: It reached 38 degrees, the high for today, around 5:30 p.m. There was wind & rain all day plus dense fog in some places. We are glad we have the full propane tanks to keep us warm. The cats continued to keep warm on their heated pads.

GOOD LUCK, GAIL.
