TRAVEL DAY
From: Ironhorse Campground in Glory Hole Recreation Area at New Melones Lake, Tuttletown, CA.
To: Happy Time RV Park, Dunnigan, CA.
Day 160 – The calendar says today is the first day of Spring; that is definitely obvious here! It’s much greener now than it was when we got here just a few days ago. So, Happy Spring everyone!
Today was a travel day; we’re moving on northwest towards the northern California coast (for just a week or so) on our way to Oregon. Tonight we’ll be in Dunnigan, CA at a private RV Park just off I-5.
We departed Ironhorse Campground at 11 a.m. It was 56 degrees and sunny when we left. The girls were not pleased – wait till they see we’re doing a couple of one-night stopovers – they’ll like that even less. Our route took us west, back some of the way we came in, driving on a narrow two-lane road by beautiful rolling hills, and driving through small, trendy old gold rush towns. We will come back here again because it’s lovely and because we want to explore these old historic towns. About the time we turned northwest on a different route than we’d traveled before, the terrain flattened out again and the farm country was our scenery with goats, lambs, cows, horses, and nut trees and vineyards. Just before reaching Interstate 5 and heading north, we pulled off the road and had our lunch in the RV by a vineyard. Then, we traveled I-5 north through Sacramento – big city time. After leaving the Sacramento area we reached our campground, an independent RV Park just off I-5. It was 2:15 p.m.
Happy Time RV Park, a little south of Dunnigan, CA, wasn’t much to look at. We’d never been here, but we were looking for an easy in/easy out place for a quick one-night stopover. It got good reviews online and it was at the right place at the right time. We had made a reservation yesterday when we were doing our research to help us decide which direction to take next. We checked in and were assigned site #2 with full hook-ups near the entrance (easy in/easy out). Even though we were near busy I-5 and next door to us we had two gas stations, a Denny’s, and two fast food restaurants, it was surprisingly quiet. Most of the campsites were occupied with either full-timers (people who live here) or seasonals (people that winter here, etc.). The birds were chirping, there were plenty of nice trees, and everything was neat and clean. So far, so good.
The high today was 70 degrees and by 6 p.m. the wind had died down. No clouds in the sky, you could see mountains in the far distance, no smog, not too shabby.
