PRIME HOOK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.

Day 23 – It was supposed to rain most of the day, so we decided to check out a different Wildlife Refuge in the morning. Prime Hook was 20 miles south of our campground. We’d been there a long time ago after visiting Bombay Hook and while it was good to see the migrating Snow and Canada Geese at that time, the Refuge wasn’t set up as well for spending a lot of time for viewing the birds.

It was 49 degrees when we got up and cloudy. By the time we left the RV for Prime Hook, it was just beginning to drizzle. We drove south and east and got to the Refuge without much traffic. We stopped at the Refuge office to find out if they had any maps and whether the migrating birds had arrived yet. Not many birds had arrived, just some Canada Geese. There were some hiking trails, and a great canoeing/kayaking water trail through the marsh but it was raining harder. Part of the Refuge was closed, including half of the water trail – hunting season. They still didn’t have a wildlife drive, but there was a road that we could drive from boat launch to boat launch. We stopped at a short hike, walked to a boardwalk and saw a group of Canada Geese flying over. The kayaking opportunities looked good here – for another time. We left the Refuge and drove a short distance to Beach Plum Island Nature Reserve, got a couple of ocean pictures, and then headed back to the RV, stopping for gas and at a grocery store for a couple of items. We arrived at the RV in time for lunch.

It continued to rain. We made garlic bread, then did research on campgrounds for the next week’s drive on our way to Louisville, Kentucky. The high never got above 51 degrees.
