NEWFOUNDLAND – JACKSON’S ARM TO THE BEACHES.

Day 117 – The weather was very nice this morning – blue skies, some billowy clouds, breezy &

mostly sunny. We don’t know what the temperature was when we got up, but it was comfortable out. Rob sat outside by the water with his coffee. The campers that came in yesterday were parked closer to the occasionally-squawking boat radio than we were, so it probably was annoying to them. Evidently they complained because an ATV arrived with an apologetic boat owner who turned the radio off. Those campers left later this morning. We are alone again.

Today we took our exploratory drive. First we went north of Pollard’s Point to Sop’s Arm and Jackson’s Arm, the two other small towns on Route 420. All three towns are on White Bay, they were nice & the scenery was beautiful. Sop’s Arm is the location where the “Main River Canadian Heritage River” meets the Bay. This area includes the Main River Waterway Provincial Park. There are no roads going into the Park, just preserved land. We discovered a small campground, Sop’s Arm Park, which borders the Main River where it meets the Bay. We drove through the Park, and NOTE TO SELF: WE SHOULD STAY HERE NEXT TIME WE COME TO NF. It is a former Provincial Park, now run by the town. All campsites are private, surrounded by trees, and half have river views. Only one camper was there. There are no services other than water – no dump station, no electricity, but a wonderful area.

We drove back to Pollard’s Point after enjoying Jackson’s Arm, a wonderful town nestled far off the beaten path with incredible views. At the RV we had our lunch, then headed back out to the only other road in the area, Route 421. There were four small towns: Hampden, Bayside, Galeville, and The Beaches. We liked The Beaches at the end of the road. Charming. Right on the Bay. Green rolling hills and rocky cliffs on all sides.

The high today was 79 degrees; it was a little windy. We drove back to the RV, made two loaves of Garlic-Cheese Bread, and did three loads of laundry. Today we did find we had Wi-Fi available at times. Hopefully we’ll have better connections tomorrow night. Stocked up & chores done, tomorrow we leave for a one-night stopover in Gros Morne National Park. We are on our way to St. Barbe where the ferry terminal is located – the ferry that travels to Labrador.

RiverSea Motel & RV Park:  Pollard’s Point, Newfoundland A0K 4B0, Route 420 north from the Trans-Canada Highway about 40 to 45 km, Pollard’s Point is the first town you come to, turn right at the first street & follow that road over the Corner Brook Bridge a short distance to Motel on the left, RV park is behind the Motel on the Bay; (709) 482-2300 phone. Around 20 campsites along the water of the Bay in a small, scenic fishing town (recreational fishing rather than commercial fishing). Nice property, great views, full hook-ups including sewer, $30 per night Canadian currency, good customer service, laundry, picnic areas, fish-cleaning station, gazebos, etc. Very nice. We would stay here again.
