ANOTHER WINDY DAY.
Day 91 – The low last night was 40 degrees; the wind had died down but it’s back full-force today, and it’s quite cloudy. We hung around the RV in the morning because we were expecting a couple of phone calls – washed our hair, made bread, did some trip planning, paid some bills, etc.
There’s a row of bushes on one side of our RV and it’s full of birds. Their tweeting back and forth is loud during the day. Rob got a few pictures.
We’d planned to take another drive around the National Forest today, but the weather was not cooperating. We decided to drive 54 miles south to Douglas, AZ for propane in the portable tank. Douglas was the closest city of any decent size. While there, we bought another portable tank so we wouldn’t need to get propane so often. There was a sign near our campground regarding selling parcels of land to sky watchers; we grabbed a picture. This area is know for its “dark skies” where star gazing is very popular. It has been cloudy most of the time since we’ve been here, but if the weather changes, we’ll be looking upward at night.
The high today was 49 degrees; cloudy and very windy. On the way back to the RV from Douglas, AZ we stopped at a place we’d seen yesterday on our way back from that drive – Sky Island Restaurant & Store. Yesterday the parking lot was full, so that peaked our interest (a full parking lot is always a good sign). This afternoon we stopped and checked the place out: a well-stocked store with plenty of green chili products (it’s New Mexico after all) and a restaurant with a decent menu. We ordered a Bake-Your-Own Pizza to go, with Hatch Green Chilis, the chili that NM is most known for. Later, at the RV, we cooked it in the oven and it was awesome. Yep, New Mexico works for us!
Tomorrow we think we’ll head into the National Forest and try to acquire one of the campsites we checked out yesterday – the ones surrounded by these incredible canyons. Since these campsites are not reservable in advance, but first come, first served, we’ll either return to this campground or move on if no site is available. The girls seem to like it here. Tomorrow is another day. NOTE: If we DO get one of the National Forest sites, we will be out of touch until we return to civilization because there is no cell phone signal there.
