KAYAKING IN THE HARBOR.

Day 95 – It started out foggy & humid, but when the fog lifted and the sun came out, we hurried to Smith Beach – the place on this peninsula that people use to launch kayaks. We had a wonderful paddle. It was almost high tide when we started out with rolling surf & very little wind. The Beach is near the mouth of the Harbor. We rode the small waves into the Harbor with the tide, which made it an easy paddle.

We kayaked to the head of the Harbor along the shore where our land is. When we reached the head, we stopped and chatted with a couple of the lobstermen. Then we headed back along the opposite shore, which is State land – no houses. By this time the tide was starting to go back out, and we were again going with the tide. Even though the wind had picked up a little, it was still a fairly easy paddle. That’s the way to do it.

The waves were crashing on the rocks. At the head of the Harbor, we turned to avoid the waves and paddled back to the Beach. For a change (lately), we have lots of pictures. It was a gorgeous time for kayaking. Click any picture below to see a slideshow.

These are the Fundy Tides here; they rise & fall many feet every day. I’m not sure it will be obvious, but below is a comparison of the grounded boat in the Harbor, one picture at low tide and some pictures from today with us kayaking above the sunken boat at high tide.

We begin getting rain from Hurricane Henri tonight, and it’s supposed to rain straight through for a couple of days. Flooding isn’t really an issue on our land because we are on a cliff, but high winds are scary because of all the trees. So far, it looks like the wind won’t be bad here. We are glad we had the opportunity to kayak today since we may be indoors for the storm. Good luck friends & relatives in MD, NJ, and NY.
