QUIET TIMES.

Day 9 – It is SO quiet here. You sure wouldn’t know it’s the beginning of Memorial Day weekend! The occasional lobster boat has gone by in the Harbor, twice, I think, since we got here yesterday afternoon. No cars. No voices. No machinery noises. Yesterday we heard Kingfishers up and down the Harbor. Today, none. And once we heard a Bald Eagle.

Of course, we do make our own noises – we snore, we go in & out of the RV, Gracie yells at us when we’re down at the tent and we meow back at her. We’re thinking we might be the only ones here on the road this early in the season. We could check things out and see if anyone else is around, but what the heck, we are enjoying the solitude.

It was a very lazy day. This morning Rob had his favorite morning time with camera & coffee at the cliff’s edge while I was showering. Completely quiet, no birds, no fish, no activity. Very peaceful. He discovered that two trees were just about down, leaning precariously on other trees. We didn’t see that yesterday, but we didn’t walk that far. We’ll have to do something about the trees. He also discovered that the Harbor had a rough winter. Oddly, a boat that had been grounded in the water & mud, had moved about 50 feet. This boat has been in the same place for years. Now there’s a hole where it was and drag marks to where it is now. It is very tidal here with the Fundy tides making a big difference between high & low tides twice daily. This boat has never moved, even a little bit. I was wondering if somebody had tried but failed to get it dragged out of the Harbor, but Rob said he didn’t think that was the case, and wouldn’t they have dragged it out to the Ocean end, not to the shallow end? Then we saw that a large tree that fell into the Harbor long ago had also moved approximately the same distance, but in the opposite direction. Strange! Was there a humongous wind storm with tidal surge? We’ll check with the locals (if we ever see any) to find out how this past winter was…..

This morning when we got up it was 42 degrees and cold. It never got above 57 degrees today. The morning was sunny; the afternoon was cloudy. We sat out in the screened tent for awhile. Had to turn on the little propane heater. The breeze made it feel pretty cold.

We picked up pizza from Morano’s. Thank goodness they are open; so many other places have closed, and there weren’t that many here to begin with. Morano’s opened a couple of years ago and they have some of the best pizza and calzones we’ve ever had. Small menu, incredibly fresh ingredients, made in a small building near the Canadian border-crossing in Lubec by two women, they say it’s New Jersey style pizza. There is no indoor dining and they are only open three days a week. We’d been looking forward to more of this pizza since we left here last September. And they didn’t let us down. Yum!
