BEGINNING THE TRIP HOME.

Day 46 – It rained hard all last night; everything is thoroughly soaked.  At 6:30 a.m. it was 56 degrees & still raining.  We’re very glad we did all the outside chores yesterday!  We departed our land at 8:50, 57 degrees and cloudy; it had stopped raining.  The girls were not thrilled to be on the road.  Many complaints from the back of the RV…..

There are many sections of Route 1 in Washington County where the road is quite bad – potholes, uneven pavement (especially in a RV), etc., and it didn’t help the kitties.  At our first stop two hours later in Ellsworth, we let them out for a break & discovered the bed was littered with the remnants of many upset stomachs.  Quite pleasant.  Basically took our appetite away, but we’d already ordered 2 crab quiche breakfasts to go from our favorite diner, Martha’s Diner.  We decided to have them for lunch, later on.

Our route was different this time.  Normally we just stay on Route 1; it’s slower but always scenic, rarely boring.  Having just made the trip about 6 weeks ago, we opted for a quicker route.  After Martha’s Diner, we continued north on the 1A to Brewer & I-395 to Bangor.  The fall colors were very nice & we enjoyed the change of scenery.  At Bangor we got on I-95 and went south, stopping in Gardiner, after the Capitol city of Augusta, for a break for the girls, and a crab quiche lunch for us.  The sun was out, very little clouds, and some wind.  It was very nice out.

We arrived at our favorite organic farm campground, Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping in Freeport, at 2:05 p.m.  We had reserved the same campsite we’d stayed at on the way to our land, Site #106, with electric & water hook-ups.  There was a two-day minimum stay, so we’ll be here for two nights.  That’s fine; there’s plenty to do in Freeport.  AND we got to watch the cows come home again.  Grin.  Which they did in the afternoon.

It was 65 degrees, sunny, and gorgeous out.  We were sitting outside overlooking the field with the Bay in the distance, and the call for the cows came out.  All in a fairly orderly line, the cows marched from the field to the milking station.  They have daily displays, mostly for the children, and you can watch the cows being milked.  These are some fat & happy cows, boy!

For dinner we went into Freeport & picked up Lobster Stew, Lobster Rolls, and Maine Blueberry Pie from the Broad Arrow Tavern at the Harrasseekit Inn.  Always excellent, we’ll probably get food from there tomorrow night, also.  We still have the windows in the RV open at 7 p.m.  We are enjoying that immensely (so are the girls).  It’s been too cold for open windows for awhile on our land.
