Day 10 – At 6:30 a.m. it was 54 degrees & foggy again. This time the fog lifted by 10 a.m. We called all eight of the contractors we’d contacted from New York, leaving all but one a message letting them know we were in town & wanted to meet with them. Now the game of phone tag begins. We’ll know soon who is interested in our project.
One contractor did answer the phone, Justin King of King Construction. He is part of a fairly large company (large, in downeast Maine standards), and he has offices in Ellsworth & Machias. He asked if we were available to come to his office today; we made a 2 p.m. appointment. We were both a little nervous, never having done this before. We printed out our current house plan & elevation drawings and made up a list of questions.
We didn’t need to be nervous. Justin took control of the conversation, proudly showing us his new office building, which he built. He spent a lot of time with us and assured us that they could do our project, even beginning almost immediately & have the foundation done in about two weeks. Whoa, wait a minute, I am thinking. We just arrived here, have lots of people to talk to, and really don’t have all our ducks in a row yet, LOL. Turned out his schedule will be much lighter soon until spring when it will be full again. It was certainly good to know that he was interested! We left the meeting with him promising to get us an estimate of costs – they would make it pretty-much turn key from site work to moving in. That would be nice……
Well, more research to do and more contractors to meet with. It was 75 degrees and sunny in Machias. When we got back to the RV, Karl Rossi of West Branch Construction returned our call. This guy had many really good reviews & we’d been hoping he’d call back. His office is in Millbridge which is a bit of a drive to our land everyday, so we thought he might not want to do work out here. He said he is interested in meeting with us & will get back to us as soon as he has a handle on his schedule this week.
