Day 8 – Foggy this morning, very Maine-coast-like out. 41 degrees at 7:15 a.m.  We relaxed a little, Rob had his cliff time in the fog, and then we left to run errands and to take a look around at things we haven’t seen since last November. From appearances, it seems that the winter didn’t do too much damage.

We drove the road on the peninsula where our land is to see if the road & properties fared well. Everything looked pretty good. We drove into Lubec to drop off our recycle trash & Rob stopped at the hardware store for a few items he needed. It was a Saturday and we probably saw less than 10 cars in town. Very quiet. Lots of places aren’t open yet for the season. The fog had cleared. We only saw one boat in the Bay. We don’t think lobster season has started yet. All the lobster pots are still piled up in people’s yards. This is the earliest in the year that we’ve ever been here.

We drove to Machias. Very quiet there also, and it was a Saturday. We went to the Health Store and got some supplies, avoiding fresh fruits & veggies because they probably won’t allow us to cross over the border with them. We saw a Seal in Machiasport, bobbing along in the water, and an Osprey sitting on a nest near Cutler. There were also some Canada Geese, Ravens, and Cormorants out & about, and we saw a Porcupine crossing a field. (More animals than people!)

We stopped at Riverside Take-Out in East Machias to visit the guys, Mark & Frank. They’d just opened last week. We hadn’t seen many people because they were all at Riverside Take-Out. We were happy to see their business doing so well. We got food for today’s lunch, tomorrow’s lunch, and tonight’s dinner. What we’ve had so far was, as usual, excellent. Rob got the Monster Haddock Burger and I got a Crab Roll. Everything was great. The high today – in Machias – was 51 degrees & cloudy. We don’t think it made it over 45 degrees at our land. Another good day. We are vying with the kitties to see who can move around the least. Tomorrow or Monday, we think we’ll take the bridge over to Campobello Island in New Brunswick. Check things out there and also go to the Visitor’s Center to get some up-to-date information & maps about Canada.
