Day 88 – Foggy & cool this morning but it’s supposed to be a nice day, so after coffee we got ready to go kayaking. Black flies & mosquitoes have started hanging around, so we brought lots of bug spray with us. By the time we headed out, the fog was gone and it was indeed a beautiful day. After an hour’s drive we arrived at the boat launch site off Route 30 a little South of Red Tavern Road. 10:20 a.m., breezy, sunny with puffy white clouds, low 60’s, and hungry bugs.

St. Regis River, near Deer River Flow, St. Regis Falls, NY

We paddled thru some reeds and into the Deer River; not a soul around. We went into some narrower channels, but mostly stayed on the River which at times became large & lake-like, and the water then got a little rougher.  At other times the water was like a sheet of glass. It was tea-colored, almost black; the sun peeked in and out of the clouds, and the reflection on the water was lovely. Extremely relaxing. Winter is barely over here so some of the trees were just starting to get their leaves while others had plenty of that fluorescent coloring of new Spring growth. We saw a few turtles & not many birds, but the scenery was fantastic.

We were out on the water for 3-1/2 hours & only saw two houses by the River, and that campground we’d seen when we drove here day before yesterday was also on the River. We checked it out from the water side, and it appeared to be used by people that lived in the campground or were there seasonally & stored their campers there when not in use. When we got home later in the afternoon, we sat outside by the St. Regis River for a bit, but then came inside because it was getting too windy. The high today was 69 degrees, partly sunny & windy at times.
