Day 47 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HELEN!!!!! WE HOPE IT’S PURRFECT!!!!!
Got up at 6:30 a.m., the kids were already hanging out at the playground area. 60 degrees and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. Rob took a bike ride and the girls are happily sleeping in various windows enjoying the breeze. Except for Pixie who is on the floor, enjoying my shoes.
We thought we’d need to leave the campground today to get away from the noise, but we were wrong. After breakfast time, it appears the parents have taken their children somewhere else, and it’s nice and quiet until later in the afternoon. There is a “wave pool” (whatever that is) here and a very busy boating area, plus a very nice day use area. Wherever they went, it allowed us picky old folk to spend time outside in the quiet. Very bright sun, no clouds, breezy, and the high was 81 degrees. Today we were smart and put the awning out early, keeping the sun away from the RV and providing us some shade.
Happy April Fool’s Day, but we’re not kidding when we say that if you like shellfish, Louisiana is a good place to be! Shrimp is my favorite food and one of Rob’s favorites, too. Fresh seafood places are EVERYWHERE in these towns: mostly take-out places that sell it fresh in big bags to take home and cook, or you can get it frozen, or they will cook it to order to eat on the large tables there, or to take the food to go. Shrimp, Crawfish, Catfish, and Oysters. And Po’Boy sandwiches. We went to a local place (there are many to choose from) and got dinner for tonight and sandwiches for tomorrow. It was excellent, huge portions, enough for more meals, and not expensive.
The cell phone has issued several 24-hour flood watches beginning early afternoon tomorrow in a huge area that includes all of Southern Louisiana. This storm supposedly is coming from Texas and they say there could be up to 3 inches of rain per hour in some areas. We’re keeping our eye on this because it’s such a low-lying area here and also where we’ll be driving on the way to our next site tomorrow. Our stay here is ending and we’ll be moving to a remote area of Southern Louisiana, a State Park on the end of a peninsula called Grand Isle right on the Gulf. We’ve both been looking forward to Grand Isle; we’ll be there 6 nights. The drive there should be interesting – right thru “cajun country” on the one lone road that goes that far South near the Mississippi River delta. (I can hear the old time Mississippi blues playing in my head.) I’d be surprised if during those seven days we have cell phone & internet connections but you never know.
Bayou Segnette State Park, 7777 West Bank Expressway, Jefferson Parish, Westwego, LA 70094, (504) 736-7145 “http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/bayou-segnette-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=LA&parkId=240020“. This Park is huge & very well-maintained. Our site (#7) was large & nice, but located directly across from the shower/restroom facilities and playground. When we went to other areas of the Park they were quiet, but our area was very busy and noisy. We’d definitely return here again; just get a site in a different location. There’s lots to explore and we didn’t have time to do anything on just a stopover. All sites have electric & water hook-ups, no sewer (there is a dump station). Sites are nicely spaced from each other & at this time of year, very few bugs. No Wi-Fi but cell phone connection was excellent. Great boating opportunities, a few small & short trails for hiking, no special biking trails but riding a bike or walking thru the campground and day use areas are good exercise because the Park is so large.
