ABOUT TYHEE LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK: When Covid entered the universe, campgrounds stopped giving out campground information and maps when you check in, particularly State Parks and Provincial Parks – government facilities. What, all people who take care of printing and shipping have quit their jobs?
So once again, we have no information about this park other than what we could glean when staying here and driving around. Tyhee Lake Provincial Park was a nice campground located just off Highway 16, the Yellowhead Highway, which crosses northern British Columbia west to east. Located just east of the city of Smithers, in the First Nations town of Telkwa, it was a good stopover on our journey west to east from Prince Rupert to Jasper National Park in the Province of Alberta Canada.
From what we saw, Tyhee Lake Provincial Park offered lots of parking for people who wanted to access the day use area, which included beaches, a boat launch, a swimming area, a playground, and a picnic area. It appeared that the campground was extremely busy on the weekends. During the week when we were there, there were still plenty of families with children who spent all day at the beach. But the campground was not 100% occupied. The campsites along the water were nice with the view but also in close proximity to the crowds enjoying the lake.
We had site #24 which we liked, especially if we backed into the site angling the RV away from the campsite next to it and parking the Honda in front of the RV blocking all views into the campsite. We put the tent up in the bushy area next to the RV and away from the neighboring site. Complete privacy and some shade. Site #20 also looked like it would be good. About ½ of the 70 plus campsites would’ve fit our RV and been level enough. But we didn’t drive through and make a list.
Some few sites offered electric hook-ups; when we made reservations 3 ½ months in advance, all electric sites were gone. We had no hook-ups, but there is a dump station and there is drinking water at the dump station (although there is no nozzle on the end of the hose, so filling the RV tank would be difficult if Rob didn’t have extra nozzles of various sizes). Mr. Fix-it!
Check-in time was 1 p.m. Check-out time was 11 a.m. Generator hours were 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. We paid $99.90 for three nights (Canadian currency) including fees and taxes. We would stay here again. It was convenient to Smithers and a good stopover location.
