ABOUT STRAYHORN LANDING – ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS CAMPGROUND: ,This was a new campground for us and it turned out to be one of the best we’d ever stayed in. It was located on a small peninsula that juts out into a huge, deep blue reservoir. Because we arrived off season, actually only a few days before they were closing for the season, almost no one was there. We chose a campsite at the end of the peninsula with gorgeous water views almost all the way around us. We had water and electric hook-ups. We couldn’t see any people from our site, but we did have Canada Geese walking around. We had beautiful weather. We wouldn’t ask for more.

As usual this trip, when staying at an Army COE campground, we didn’t get any paperwork about the campground when we arrived. We just checked in with the campground host and did what they said – find a site, put your money in the envelope, deposit it in the slot. We chose site #15. All the campsites in the outer loop had a water view, some more of a view than others, but all were fine. The campsites in the inner loop were large enough, but some were close together and some were facing the playground and the picnic pavilion. All campsites had water and electric hook-ups. There was a dump station. We could fit in all the sites, although some were longer than others. If we were to come here again and wanted to make a reservation in advance, we should go for either site #15 or site #14, but again – all outer-loop campsites would work out. We paid $8 per night – off season rate plus 50% off with the senior pass! It was a 30 minute drive from the campground to Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. NOTE: This campground closed December 1st in 2021; also, prime time for waterfowl migration at the wildlife refuge may be after early December or so because that’s when they were flooding the impoundments this year. We also checked out Tenkiller State Park on the other side of the reservoir. It was a huge campground and not nearly as nice as Strayhorn Landing, but if we wanted to stay longer for the Snow Geese, we could transfer over to the state park from the COE campground in December.
